Overview

More and more people are listening to classical music today, yet to many it still seems a closed and inaccessible world. Classical Music is designed to demystify this seemingly complex world - making everything from Gregorian chants to Beethoven symphonies to Philip Glass operas accessible to laymen. It is an informative guide to the musical moods and talents of 800 years of classical music. Classical Music takes a broad look at the times that inspired the music, a closer look at the lives of the individual composers, then focuses on the compositions themselves, and recommends recordings - selected by Gramophone magazine, for the key works of every composer. As well as telling the stories of the great and the famous, such as Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart, the book introduces a number of talented composers - such as Franz Berwald, John Field, and Hugo Wolf - whose music is less widely known and deserves to be discovered.

An accessible and informative guide to more than 800 years of classical music, composers, musical instruments, and performance. Some 300 full-color photos, maps, and archival material help bring the text to life, and 100 specially commissioned color illustrations simplify complex subjects.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Quite an attractive, thoughtfully prepared, useful reference which begins with an introduction to instruments, orchestras, and the voice, a glossary of musical terms, and lists and commentary on master recordings. Each classical music era, from the Middle Ages to the 20th century is covered, with overviews of the political, social, scientific, artistic, and literary developments of the period, as well as biographies of major composers. For fledgling collectors, each composer's entry recommends specific works and recordings, based on ratings by Gramophone Magazine. The numerous well-chosen color photos are varied--works of art and architecture representative of the periods, portraits, stage designs--and nicely printed. The text is informative and well written. 9.25x11.75" Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

    Wonderful book

This book has inspired me to become appreciative of music, but not only has this book, but also my music appreciation teacher, Mr. Cina. He is a very dedicated, knowledgable teacher that brings learning to a whole other level because he seems to know everything about anything. I have learned alot from him and i would like to thank Mr. John Cina for being one of the best teachers Lane Tech has ever had!

    Great for first timers

We are using this book at Lane Tech High School and it has dramatically helped me better understand composers, musical eras, and music in general and how it is related to the events that surrond it. Not only has it kept my interest, but i am also very involved in my music appreciation class.
