Overview

On Classics for a New Century, 13 of Sony Classical's releases are stripped of all but their most emotional moments. It's an exhausting listen start to finish, better served in small doses. There's classical artists crossing over to pop and pop artists crossing over to classical, bits of soundtracks, plus some blending of world and electronic music with traditional pieces. Just about everybody is trying something new except Murray Perahia, whose Chopin piece was probably included because it won a Grammy. The greatest injustice is the pianist who played on a track taken from The Pianist isn't even credited (it was Janusz Olejniczak). Nonetheless, advertising executives should grab a copy since all of the emotive tracks will work wonders for their products. Classics for a New Century is the kind of release that will make purists cringe and others will swoon over.
