Overview

This second edition of the popular Classics in Clinical Dermatology with Biographical Sketches, first published in 1953, has been expanded considerably. Compiled and edited by two of the most acknowledged figures in dermatology over the past half-century, this new edition contains the complete contents of the first edition - 95 authors, from 21 countries, and the world literature of the preceding 150 years - plus about 30 new classic papers that have appeared in the past 50 years. The diseases depicted vary from daily clinical fare to the rarest of the rare. Some are case reports, while others are the fruit of countless hours in the meticulous study of many patients. This book is a favorite for anyone interested in dermatology.

Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD (Private Practice)
Description: Historical vignettes on the discoveries of well known skin diseases, their original descriptions, and their discoverers are the focus of this history book. History buffs like Dr. John Wolfe will love this book.
Purpose: Black-and-white drawings of the early dermatologists are including at the beginning of each story. A biographical sketch of each famous dermatologist is included. We learn about their family history, personal interests and how their brilliant perception led them to define new diseases.
Audience: The audience is history buffs and students of dermatology history.
Features: I particularly enjoyed the fine language used for diagnosing. It is like reading about a piece of art work. One had to be not only a good doctor, but a writer as well.
Assessment: It is interesting to read the precision with which these diseases were described. As the chapters progress to modern day dermatology, the descriptions are more involved with laboratory testing in the diagnosis. I am unaware of similar books.
