Cute, bubbly Izumi harbored a secret crush on the senpai of his tennis team, Nishizaki but hated the team’s manager, his classmate by the name of Asakura because the latter always seemed so brusque. He soon found that the apathetic Asakura has a heart of gold and he was falling for Asakura on the rebound from Nishizaki’s rejection. But will Izumi ever muster up the courage to tell Asakura of his love?
In the second story, the studious Mizuno found himself unexpectedly on the receiving end of a love confession from his long time classmate, the athletic Takamura. However, could the polar opposites bind together when they were destined for different high schools?
In the third story, Aoyama had to make the decision between being satisfied with a quid pro quo relationship with his supervisor, Itou, who slept with him as a reward to stay on his job or take a bid to win Itou’s heart for good.
The common theme that runs through all the three stories is the bittersweet feeling of insecurity that we all feel when faced with new loves. I actually find the first two shounen-ai stories about the school boys very endearing and quite charming. This is the first time I read Kiyo Ueda’s work and I really enjoyed her clean and adorable art. I think I might check out her other two works that had been licensed and published by June now.
The translation and editing are very good as seen in the subtle nuances between the dialogues between the school and corporate setting. What truly impress me are the type-setting details that went into this work – the letterer took pains to follow DMG’s guidelines and try to match the fonts of the translated SFX to the original Japanese (large and tiny). Overall, I find “Classmate” a pleasant stroll down the memory lane of high school crushes and would recommend it for anyone looking for such nostalgic read.
