Overview

The hit series returns to charm and inspire another generation of baby-sitters! The first three classic BSC books are back, along with a brand-new prequel, The Summer Before.

Being a good baby-sitter isn't always easy, and the vice-president of the Baby-Sitters Club, Claudia Kishi, is learning that the hard way. She and the other club members have started getting strange calls on the job. Is it the Phantom Caller, a jewel thief who's been breaking into houses in the area? One thing is certain -- the Club has to take action to protect their kids!

Claudia decides to investigate when she and the other members of the Baby-sitters Club receive mysterious phone calls while out on assignments.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The girls are all back in this new adventure with the Baby-Sitters Club (BSC). Friends Mary Ann, Stacey, Kristy, and Claudia have formed an alliance to organize their babysitting duties, so that someone is always available for every job and each girl knows every client. When Mary Ann reads in the paper that a burglar is calling homes in a nearby city and then hanging up without talking, only to rob the house later in the evening, the girls all become concerned that the phantom caller will move into their town. Now, at their BSC meetings, the talk is sometimes about boys, the upcoming Halloween dance, and upcoming jobs but most of the time the discussion is about the phantom caller. When one of the girls receives a "phantom" call while on a job, their nerves become truly rattled. Every sound and every unfamiliar crick becomes a threat. True to their nature, the girls rally around each other and manage to solve the mystery while caring for their young clients. In the telling of the story, Martin reinforces teamwork, sibling relationships, character building, and fun. Upper elementary grade students have come to rely on this author for interesting stories, and this tale is no exception. For readers who require a larger dose of BSC information, Scholastic provides a Web link to the girls. All elementary media collections and language arts classrooms will want to include this latest adventure in their collection. Reviewer: Joyce Rice
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5 The four 12-year-old girls who comprise ``The Baby-sitters Club'' are worried about a robber whose pattern involves first calling the possible victim and then remaining silent. The girls, responsible babysitters, are at the same time gossipy girls who are variously at odds with members of their families, their schoolwork, and above all, boys. It is one of the latter who turns out to be Claudia's ``Phantom caller,'' brave enough to dial, but too shy to ask her to the dance. Martin sometimes writes as her audience would (Claudia ``goes'' rather than ``says,'' for instance). Claudia is an underachiever, but gifted in art; she has a brilliant sister she doesn't like; and she is Japanese. She should be an interesting and complex character, but she is hardly distinguishable from the other three babysitters. This contrived story is one of those ephemeral paperbacks that can easily be forgotten. Carolyn Jenks, Oyster River Elementary School, Durham, N.H.

Things are starting to go well for The Baby-Sitters Club. They're getting a fair amount of babysitting jobs and the business is paying off not only for them, but the adults who hire them, as well.

When the Phantom Caller, a jewel thief who calls and hangs up, then robs the house he just called, is reported in the area, the babysitters are uneasy. Their fear, however, grows worse when they start receiving hang-up calls on the job.

Is it the Phantom Caller or a prank caller? Whatever it is, the babysitters are on the case and are determined to protect the kids they watch.

One of the more unique books in THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB series, readers will enjoy the mix of humor, mystery, and friendship. The characters are better and even more memorable than they were in the first book, and their new challenges keep the book interesting.

Readers who like realistic fiction will enjoy reading CLAUDIA AND THE PHANTOM PHONE CALLS.

Do you babysit and sometimes get scared, especially since you're in charge?

Claudia is a valuable asset to the babysitters club. She has junkfood hidden all over her room. She really is a character that you can relate to, and would probably be friends with in real life. She deals with someone crank calling while she is babysitting. Now days there are cell phones and caller id, but if you think about how scary it can be sometimes when you are home alone, or the person in charge, this really hits home.

The characters and their situations are very realistic. The family settings mirror your own. The girls are totally likeable and it is amazing to me that the author could come up with all kinds of scenarios. These books inspired me when I was learning to babysit.

    Fantastic Book!!!!!!!!!

This book was amazing!!!!!!!! I couldnt put it down! I was really suprised when i found out who the phantom caller was. This book is much different from the first one because the first baby-sitters club book was narrated by Kristy, but in the second one, Claudia is the narrator. You have to read this book. Its not just for girls and it doesnt matter how old you are, because this book will pull you in and wont let you go. This is a MUST READ BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy it!

    Phantom

Do you like mysteries? Well, I have the perfect book for you. Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls is a great book for girls who like mysteries. This book reminded me of when our doorbell on mischief night a couple of years ago and no one was there. I liked this book because it is interesting and I also like mysteries. This hauntingly good book has spooky phone calls and has strange shadows outside. Don¿t forget the ringing doorbell. Read this book and find out what happens and who the phantom is.

My favorite of the BSC series

In the thrid grade through the seventh grade, I was OBSSESSED with BSC! This one was my favortie of the series. I really liked how they all handled the situation, and were still able to enjoy what they were doing. My favorite Baby-Sitter was (and still is) Claudia. She is the one that is most like me!
