One thing is certain -- the Club has to take action to protect their kids!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
The girls are all back in this new adventure with the Baby-Sitters Club (BSC). Friends Mary Ann, Stacey, Kristy, and Claudia have formed an alliance to organize their babysitting duties, so that someone is always available for every job and each girl knows every client. When Mary Ann reads in the paper that a burglar is calling homes in a nearby city and then hanging up without talking, only to rob the house later in the evening, the girls all become concerned that the phantom caller will move into their town. Now, at their BSC meetings, the talk is sometimes about boys, the upcoming Halloween dance, and upcoming jobs but most of the time the discussion is about the phantom caller. When one of the girls receives a "phantom" call while on a job, their nerves become truly rattled. Every sound and every unfamiliar crick becomes a threat. True to their nature, the girls rally around each other and manage to solve the mystery while caring for their young clients. In the telling of the story, Martin reinforces teamwork, sibling relationships, character building, and fun. Upper elementary grade students have come to rely on this author for interesting stories, and this tale is no exception. For readers who require a larger dose of BSC information, Scholastic provides a Web link to the girls. All elementary media collections and language arts classrooms will want to include this latest adventure in their collection. Reviewer: Joyce Rice

Gr 3-5 The four 12-year-old girls who comprise ``The Baby-sitters Club'' are worried about a robber whose pattern involves first calling the possible victim and then remaining silent. The girls, responsible babysitters, are at the same time gossipy girls who are variously at odds with members of their families, their schoolwork, and above all, boys. It is one of the latter who turns out to be Claudia's ``Phantom caller,'' brave enough to dial, but too shy to ask her to the dance. Martin sometimes writes as her audience would (Claudia ``goes'' rather than ``says,'' for instance). Claudia is an underachiever, but gifted in art; she has a brilliant sister she doesn't like; and she is Japanese. She should be an interesting and complex character, but she is hardly distinguishable from the other three babysitters. This contrived story is one of those ephemeral paperbacks that can easily be forgotten. Carolyn Jenks, Oyster River Elementary School, Durham, N.H.

This is a really great book. It combines a cliff-hanging mystery with a mushy love story and it is totally worth every penny.

One of my fav books. I really like the BSC. There are ever so many books! There is 135 ( I think ) of the reguler series. Then there is; California Diarys ,( about Dawn's life in California) and Baby- Sitters Little Sister,( about Karen, Kristy's imaginitive little stepsister), Baby-sitters Super Specials ( fun trips), Baby-Sitters Portriot Collection ( about each Baby Sitter' s past, it is basicly just their biography), Baby-Sitters Mysterys ( mysterys that involve The Baby Sitters and Baby Sittting and The Club) , and the Baby-Sitters Super Mysterys ( the same as mysterys) . The members are ( plus what book they joined the club in ps the ones that are from the start they were the members of the club till they asked people 2 join their club ) : Claudia v.p. ( from the start) ,Kristy p. ( from the start) ,Stacey tresuerer ( from the start) , Dawn alternate officer ( book 4 ) , and Mary Anne ( from the start) secertary. Then comes in assosiate members Shannon ( book 12?) and Logan( book 10) . In comes Mallory (book 14?) and Jessi ( same book as Mallory) junior officers. Finally in book 90 Abbey ( the last member 2 join) comes in. So, in this book Claudia and The BSC are gtting creepy phone calls! Ahhhh! Is it The Phantom Phone Caller!? He is a theif and he calls then hangs up without a word just checking to see if the people are home yet, then when they don't answer he goes over and robs them! The BSC is really worried and pretty ( well a lot) scared. Oh what are they gonna do? Find out in this book! I like this book so you likey or no likey? Hit yes if this is helpful but no pressure if ya don't wanna. Thanks bye. - bsc girl.

Things are starting to go well for The Baby-Sitters Club. They're getting a fair amount of babysitting jobs and the business is paying off not only for them, but the adults who hire them, as well. When the Phantom Caller, a jewel thief who calls and hangs up, then robs the house he just called, is reported in the area, the babysitters are uneasy. Their fear, however, grows worse when they start receiving hang-up calls on the job. Is it the Phantom Caller or a prank caller? Whatever it is, the babysitters are on the case and are determined to protect the kids they watch. One of the more unique books in THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB series, readers will enjoy the mix of humor, mystery, and friendship. The characters are better and even more memorable than they were in the first book, and their new challenges keep the book interesting. Readers who like realistic fiction will enjoy reading CLAUDIA AND THE PHANTOM PHONE CALLS.

Claudia is a valuable asset to the babysitters club. She has junkfood hidden all over her room. She really is a character that you can relate to, and would probably be friends with in real life. She deals with someone crank calling while she is babysitting. Now days there are cell phones and caller id, but if you think about how scary it can be sometimes when you are home alone, or the person in charge, this really hits home. The characters and their situations are very realistic. The family settings mirror your own. The girls are totally likeable and it is amazing to me that the author could come up with all kinds of scenarios. These books inspired me when I was learning to babysit.

This book was amazing!!!!!!!! I couldnt put it down! I was really suprised when i found out who the phantom caller was. This book is much different from the first one because the first baby-sitters club book was narrated by Kristy, but in the second one, Claudia is the narrator. You have to read this book. Its not just for girls and it doesnt matter how old you are, because this book will pull you in and wont let you go. This is a MUST READ BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy it! -- Coolkat02879

Do you like mysteries? Well, I have the perfect book for you. Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls is a great book for girls who like mysteries. This book reminded me of when our doorbell on mischief night a couple of years ago and no one was there. I liked this book because it is interesting and I also like mysteries. This hauntingly good book has spooky phone calls and has strange shadows outside. Don¿t forget the ringing doorbell. Read this book and find out what happens and who the phantom is.

In the thrid grade through the seventh grade, I was OBSSESSED with BSC! This one was my favortie of the series. I really liked how they all handled the situation, and were still able to enjoy what they were doing. My favorite Baby-Sitter was (and still is) Claudia. She is the one that is most like me!

I thought this book was one of the best one's i've read so far of the BSC books. It deals with Claudia and her school woes, to the mystery behind phantom phone calls. I was surprised at the end when they unmasked the Phantom Phone Caller, and I thought it was hilarious when one of the boys they were babysitting at the time yelled at them to speak louder for he could hear them(this was when they had unmasked the Phantom Caller and were getting an explanation, so the baby-sitters sent the kids in the kitchen).

I've positively fallen in love with this book. it was so good! It starts off with a robber touring Connecticut, Stoneybrook and nearby places. When the Club hears about this, they are worried about him because since they'll be babysitting maybe the robber might show up and then..... Claudia and Kristy are the ones who are mainly 'phantom called.' And I don't see why not because they are really pretty. my favorite babysitters are Claudia, Kristy, and Stacey. they are all so pretty! Claudia has great black hair and beautiful almond shaped eyes and Kristy has brown hair and brown eyes. kind of plain, but I really like her. Stacey has blond permed hair and blue eyes. I mean it. they are all gorgeous!!!! I love the part where Mary Ann is babysitting for David Michael and she keeps getting frightened. it is so COOL! i think this is one of the greatest works of art in the world! Ann really knows how to express deep feelings within just a few words! GREAT WORK ANN! KEEP IT UP!!!!!!
