School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 6-12-- A detailed overview of the development of innovative, ``environmentally sensitive'' techniques for pest control and the decontamination of soil and water. Also examined are new methods for cleaning up toxic wastes and oil spills that employ either natural or genetically altered bacteria or fungi. Guidelines for domestic, nonchemical pest control are also given. Appendixes provide names and addresses of environmental groups as well as suppliers of ``biocontrol'' products. While the discussion is a bit on the dry side, the material is well organized, clearly written, and accurate for the most part. Black-and-white photos, most of which were supplied by the Agricultural Research Service, are consistently mediocre and add little to the text. As little information is available on the subject this title, despite its flaws, will be a useful resource for school reports. --Karey Wehner, San Francisco Public Library
