Overview

For many decades after her death, the life story of Lili Boulanger (1893-1918) was better known than her music. Prodigiously talented but suffering from ill health throughout her short life, the younger sister of the legendary teacher Nadia Boulanger was the first woman to win the Prix de Rome, at age 19. (A few years earlier, Nadia had only placed second.) In recent years, however, Boulanger's music -- a small number of works, but nonetheless impressive considering the brevity of her career -- has begun to receive much-deserved attention on record, including excellent choral and orchestral collections from Chandos and Timpani. Her songs are at the heart of this recital by the soprano Patrice Michaels. Clairières dans le ciel, a cycle of 13 songs on poems of Francis Jammes, is one of Boulanger's finest creations, with eloquent text setting, complex emotional terrain, and shimmering, rapturous harmonies worthy of Debussy. In addition to four other songs by Boulanger, the carefully planned program includes several works by composers who inspired her -- Fauré, Ravel, Debussy -- as well as her contemporary Honegger and the younger Messiaen. There are affinities between Boulanger and all of these composers, and her music is eminently worthy of standing in such distinguished company. The performances by Michaels and pianist Rebecca Rollins are thoughtful and intelligent throughout. Michaels's voice is attractive if not exceptionally beautiful, light and bright with a rapid vibrato, and it serves this music well. Thorough liner notes on both the music and the poetry round out this desirable release.
