Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
For history buffs, girls who like icons, and museumgoers inspired by an outing to the Egyptian Wing, here is a lively and intriguing outline of Cleopatra’s remarkable story.
—New York Times online
Children's Literature - Karen Leggett
"I hate Cleopatra," wrote the Roman politician Cicero, in one of many tidbits of information hidden behind a flap of paper in this large format, heavily illustrated biography of Cleopatra. The spiciness of the comment and its presence under a flap might just intrigue a young reader enough to send them searching for more details. The book is indeed a seek-and-find adventure; can you find the Roman coin that Brutus issued bearing two daggers and the date EID MAR; the day Brutus assassinated Caesar, and more. There are many details of Cleopatra's power, her loves, her wars, her children, and her hairstyles. There is a great array of art inspired by Cleopatra, from classical paintings to movies to pop art icons to quotes from Shakespeare. The author notes that "modern historians have been able to separate fact from fiction, and we can now tell the story of the woman behind the legends," but we still know little of what Cleopatra thought about her own life. So there are snippets of imagined journals in which Cleopatra talks about the "accursed tradition" of sharing the throne with her brother and claims she took her own life "so that the glorious fire of the Ptolemies may burn brighter." Because of all the flaps and folding maps glued to almost every page, the book would be safer in a classroom or brought out by special request in a library, but it is likely to become dog-eared from young readers going back again and again to see if they missed something. Gr 6–9—Cleopatra is an endless source of fascination to historians and young people alike. As a ruler of Egypt, she has been portrayed in a variety of ways, from conniving temptress to powerful queen. This volume manages to show her in all of her complexities, highlighting her strengths as a pharaoh and a leader of her people, as well as describing how she manipulated those around her to do her bidding. Controversial as her reign was, the facts, such as they exist, are presented clearly with global contexts provided, such as her complicated relationships with both Julius Caesar and, later, Mark Antony. Her role in the Ptolemy family is described, and explanations about the political machinations surrounding the reigns of her father, siblings, and Cleopatra herself are clear and concise. Illustrated flaps to lift and explore and sidebars offer up intriguing details about hairstyles, jewelry, battles, and religion. Artwork, photographs, maps, diagrams, and a host of other artistic detail provide an immersive browsing opportunity. A rich, compelling story, broken down into accessible sections, coupled with an attractive and fun layout, makes this an excellent addition to any biography collection.—Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA
