Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Grant's 1972 portrait of the Egyptian monarch paints her as more than just a vamp. A multifaceted woman, she was knowledgeable about everything from politics to agriculture. Her endeavors to rebuild her failing empire, however, never came to fruition. The text is buttressed with numerous illustrations. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

This is the most carefully researched, accurately documented life of Cleopatra I have ever read. With all the distortions of her life history has preserved, it's extremely important to get a clear, truthful picture of who she really was and Michael Grant has painted that revealing portrait. It's all there. The dangerous Ptolemy family life, the policies she was raised to adhere to and her acension to power. This woman was not the 'voluptuous harlot' history likes to trivialize her as, but a woman intelligent enough, amibitious enough and rich enough to rule half the world and charm the two most powerful men in the world at that time. I would hope this would be the way Cleopatra VII would be remembered. Thanks to Michael Grant, we have a clear telescope to peek back in time.
