Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Under one cover and between the red endpapers is a collection of six Clifford, the big, red dog stories that children have enjoyed for several decades. The colored borders mark the sections for each story. In the first story, the character, Emily Elizabeth, introduces her dog, Clifford, and the interesting situations involving the ownership of an enormous dog. For example, Clifford eats lots of dog food but his size alone keeps burglars away from the house. The five remaining adventures with Clifford and Emily Elizabeth include the circus, a job, a trip, good deeds, and dog tricks. Owning a huge dog has its positive and negative moments. However, Emily Elizabeth finds her love for her pet out sizes the negatives. For instance, in one story, Clifford manages to save the day by rescuing Emily and the circus man who drift off in a runaway balloon and in another adventure, the big, red dog helps the police by catching the robbers. In the book, there is an introduction about the author/illustrator, Norman Bridwell. Along with a letter from the author to the reader, there is a brief description of Bridwell's life related to his path in becoming an author/illustrator. Included in the introduction is a picture of the original Clifford painting along with some photographs of Bridwell and Emily Elizabeth. This collection of Clifford's classic adventures is a welcomed treasure, designed to help celebrate Clifford's fiftieth birthday. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
