Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
As shown on the opening page, Clifford started out small, but within a year became like the Superman of the dog world. He is red and big—so big, in fact, that he cannot fit in the veterinarian's office for his annual checkup. Clifford even breaks the scale; fortunately, the doctor comes up with an ingenious way to figure out his weight—transport Clifford over to a truck weigh station. His heart seems fine, and while Clifford still doesn't like to get shots, he bravely faces the one he gets. The doctor gives him a treat for being such a good patient and tells him that he can stop growing. This seems to be more of a story at helping dispel kids' fears of visiting the doctor or taking their pets to see a vet rather than it is a usual Clifford-antics story, in which he causes quite a bit of chaos. This is still a choice that will find fans among those who love this big red dog. This is a level 1 beginning reader in the "Scholastic Readers" series, which feature stories of 50 to 250 words. The back cover explains the series and also includes lexile level and guided reading information. This is a Guided Reading Level L book. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
