Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula McMillen
Over four hundred words are presented in alphabetic order, each accompanied by a drawing and a sentence using the word, rather than a formal definition. The right-hand page borders are color-coded with the appropriate letter in red and a table of contents also provides page numbers to help locate specific letters. The number of words offered obviously depend on the initial letter with, for example, ten pages of words and pictures for "S" and only two for "V." The dictionary portion is followed by sections on numbers and colors, body parts for people and animals, seasons, activities (e.g., baking, swimming), places (e.g., towns, desert, island), opposites, relationships between people, and modes of transportation. Several aspects of the book raise concerns, particularly with regard to its appropriateness for second language learners. The use of the Clifford character sometimes presents the dog as gigantic in size relative to the target word, and sometimes as very tiny, which would certainly be confusing. Phrases such as "a lot" (in the "A's") are included as target words, and pictorial representations are seemingly more dictated by artistic considerations than accurate representation. For example, the word "bone" is illustrated by a can filled with dog biscuits; although they might be called dog bones on the package, they hardly offer a useful guide for identifying actual bones or understanding their function. Many drawings fail to illustrate relational words, e.g., "together" shows Clifford with two other dogs, but could as easily illustrate "beside" or "above" given the arrangement of figures. Although fans of the "Clifford" series may be aided in learning the alphabet with this book, it is not recommended as a dictionary. Reviewer: Paula McMillen, Ph.D.
