Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The Clifford stories seem to be very popular, perhaps kids like the idea of a huge red dog and all that he can do. In this story Emily Elizabeth's class is off on a trip to an aquarium. Most of the students ride on the school bus while others ride on Clifford's back. While there, they watch the seals play and Clifford manages to bat a ball back and make friends. He also sticks his nose into the octopus tank and learns the hard way that that was not the thing to do. The aquarium is trying to send a baby whale back to the sea, but the truck that was supposed to haul the baby will not start. You guessed it! Clifford comes to the rescue and eventually the whale is reunited with its pod. It is all quite fanciful since an aquarium is unlikely to let a dog in and parents are unlikely to let their children ride on Clifford's back, but the story is amusing. The drawings are simple black line illustration without much detail in the children's faces, yet the emotions are still evident. A Level 1 book in the "Scholastic Reader" series identified as guided reading level J, Lexile 190 and with a word count of 222. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
