Overview

A veteran hockey writer takes on hockey culture and the NHL--addressing the games most controversial issue Whether its on-ice fist fights or head shots into the glass, hockey has become a nightly news spectacle--with players pummeling and bashing each other across the ice like drunken gladiators. And while the NHL may actually condone on-ice violence as a ticket draw, diehard hockey fan and expert Adam Proteau argues against hockeys transformation into a thuggish blood sport. In Fighting the Good Fight, Proteau sheds light on the many perspectives of those in and around the game, with interviews of current and former NHL stars, coaches, general managers, and league executives, as well as medical experts. One of the most well-known media figures on the hockey scene today, famous for his funny, feisty observations as a writer for the Toronto Star and The Hockey News and commentator on CBC radio and TV, Adam Proteau is also one of the few mainstream media voices who is vehemently anti-fighting in hockey. Not only is his book a plea to the games gatekeepers to finally clamp down on the runaway violence that permeates the sport even at its highest level, he offers realistic suggestions on ways to finally clean the game up. • Includes interviews with medical experts on head injuries and concussions, as well as with other members of the media • The author not only wages an attack on the value of fighting in hockey--but also on the establishment hockey culture Covering the most polarizing issue in hockey today, Fighting the Good Fight gives hockey fans and sports lovers everywhere a reason to stamp their feet and whistle--at a rare display of eloquence and common sense. I used this book for the 0041 test. It is copyrighted from 2006, which is something I did not look at in the first place, but I should have. The MLA and APA suggestions are not accurate compared to the current standards. I also found, even though I am not a highly reliable authority on the matter, the book was incorrect in some of its answers. Also, when I actually took the 0041 test, it was not like the one in the book. The one in the book gave a plethora of varying questions from comprehension to grammar to history but the actual test focused more on the paragraph comprehension. The most negative characteristic of the book is the incorrect use of MLA and APA along with some other things. It lowered the reliability of the book in my opinion.

So, finding myself needing to pass the Praxis II exam for English (Test 10041), I set out to Barnes and Noble in search of a test prep/study guide. I found this one and it has proven to be fairly useful. It focuses first on what is involved in a standardized multiple choice test and what types of multiple choice questions the Praxis II in English offers. Then it goes through strategies for each type. The next section of the book is a series of outlines and definitions for concepts, terms, novels, poems, etc. that you should know to pass the test. They don't go into too much detail on each item but it is meant to serve as a heads-up for things you should study more on your own. Lastly there are full-length practice tests for each of the Praxis II English tests. My only major gripe is that this book covers all four English Praxis II tests instead of focusing on just one test (10041). However, they do a good job of trying to make the each section about all four tests and each test-specific section still relevant to the other tests. If I pass the test (which I should) I might put up my score as a testament to how useful this was. :-)

This book includes: study tips, explanations of each test (number of questions, question formats, time formats, etc), tips on how to answer questions you don't know the answer to, literary terms and their definitions, reading lists, period lists and information, grammar/syntax, composition/rhetoric, poetry, suggested references, internet resources, mini and full length practice tests. I wish I'd ordered it sooner. A great study guide!

Taking such a Praxis II exam, of course, requires a well established core of knowledge. This book supplements the material already covered in an English program at a university. It served well as a resource for further research, especially for the 0041 exam. For example, I had never read _The Catcher in the Rye_, which is a novel that may be covered in the exam. This book also references specific works which may appear on the exam; however, this list is not exhaustive. I'll be taking the exam in about six months, and I believe this book guided me in right direction.

I bought both this and the most recent version of REA's test prep for the Praxis English tests. It got to the point and very concise, especially having been out of college for over 30 years. I felt that it prepared me well with the practice tests in the back. I'll use the content for when I do get a job as an English teacher. I've taken the Middle School Language Arts Praxis and felt well prepared.

Whether you are talking the Middle school English exam or any of the other english praxis examinations this is sure to help you with an overall view of what is on the test. Out of all of the test reviews for this particular subject this is the best I saw. I did review of few of them in the bookstore and this one gives you 5 tests. You can take all of them if you need to. I would also reccomend to use this book as a supplement and to continue you study further with the books listed to study in this book.

This is a good way to familiarize yourself with the exam content and format, but make sure you review your practice test answers carefully. I have found a few incorrect answers in the key, for example the book states that Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 is set in the 24th century, when it is actually set in the 21st century. Overall, a decent way to prep for the Praxis II English 0049 exam.

I have read all of your comments and I feel good about getting this book. I am also a non-english major and I am nervous I will not know everything on the test. However, as a Commuincations major I'm sure I will see some things I have learned in class. I will take the test in July so I'm praying this book with guide me.

If used correctly, the study guide will help future English teachers succeed on the Praxis test. However, one must approach the study guide as nothing more than a guide. It will tell you, in general, what to study and how the test is organized. Study the answers just as hard as the questions. Everything that was on 0041 and 0049 could be found in this guide.

As a non-English major, I was very worried about taking (and passing) the Praxis 2 English Content Knowledge exam. A friend of mine who had previously taken the exam recommended this book, and it proved incredibly useful. It has a great overview of the types of information you will be quized on, and a list of literature you should be familiar with. Also, the practice test and answer explanations helped me to determine my weaknesses. The only resources I used to prepare for the exam was this book and wikipedia entries (for familiarizing myself with works I hadn't read) and I walked out of my test this morning extremely confident. Make some flashcards with the information Cliffs Notes provides and you'll do well.
