Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
This nonfiction title in the "Weather and Climate" series explores the history of climate changes and the changes that are happening in the present time. Past climates throughout the world are compared with the today's climate along with the causes that scientists believe have contributed to these changes. Photographs, maps, and graphs aid in the explanations, and frequent "Weather Report" boxes add additional relevant facts. The illustrations are accompanied by several sentences that explain the subject in the picture or graph. Topics include global warming, melting ice, and the green effect. A chapter is devoted to an explanation of things people can do to stop or slow down the climate change. Words in bold print throughout the text are defined in the glossary, and the text contains a table of contents and an index. A "Weather Wonders" page lists some interesting facts and records. As an overview of changes in the world's climate, this text offers basic information that should be helpful as a reference resource. Reviewer: Vicki Foote

Gr 3-5–These overviews provide bare-bones facts on a wide variety of subtopics. For example, Climate Change includes a time line of Earth’s climates and briefly describes each one, outlines the various factors that can cause changes, discusses global warming and its consequences, and lists some things that people can do (though the measures described can only be accomplished by adults or by the government). Apart from the information found in How Weather Works and Watching Weather, the material in this series is available in other titles. How Weather Works is useful because it features easy-to-understand graphics and a text that explains the layers of the atmosphere, what causes seasons, the water cycle, and how warm and cold currents move through the oceans. Watching Weather has fewer diagrams, but kids with a meteorological bent will enjoy learning how the information in the weather forecast is gathered, and how to interpret it in more detail. All of the books have large color photos and computer-generated illustrations.
