Climb Against the Odds

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kerry Dexter
CLIMB AGAINST THE ODDS opens with the hard-won optimism of Beth Nielsen Chapman's "Happy Girl" and concludes with the hypnotic and almost wordless "Fulani Chant" by Sweet Honey in the Rock. The distance -- and the connections-- between these two songs could be a metaphor for the revelations of the journey they celebrate, the trek of 12 women, all touched in one way or another by breast cancer, on a climb up Alaska's Mount McKinley. Their expedition is the subject of a documentary film airing on PBS. Illuminated by the music of Nanci Griffith "Across the Great Divide", Mary Chapin Carpenter "Why Walk When You Can Fly", Indigo Girls "Everything in Its Own Time", and ...

Illuminated by the music of Nanci Griffith "Across the Great Divide", Mary Chapin Carpenter "Why Walk When You Can Fly", Indigo Girls "Everything in Its Own Time", and Celine Dion "Love Can Move Mountains", the film is motivated by sisterly concern. Fittingly, these artists contributed their songs to the project, as did Jami Sieber, who wrote the lovely instrumental "Tell It by Heart" especially for the film, Karen Pernick, who composed the title song, and Laura Karpman, who scored the film.
All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
This soundtrack to a PBS documentary about a group of breast-cancer survivors who climb Mount McKinley consists largely of previously released tracks by popular female recording artists including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Paula Cole, Celine Dion, Nanci Griffith, k.d. lang, and Indigo Girls, several of which roughly relate to the film's plot such as Griffith's recording of Kate Wolf's "Across the Great Divide" and Dion's of Diane Warren's "Love Can Move Mountains". As such, it's hardly an essential purchase on aesthetic grounds, but the artists have all donated their services to the Breast Cancer Fund, which sponsored the climb, and the film serves to heighten awareness of breast cancer.
