Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The opening page is great. It shows a picture and asks a question, "What is clinging to the sea grass?" Turn the page and there is a seahorse with its tail wrapped around a frond. The short but engaging teXt describes seahorse characteristics such as its prehensile tail, how it moves in water, its camouflage techniques, body parts and the gestation and birth of baby seahorses. The pictures are eXcellent. The closing pages provide a map to show the places where seahorses live and a diagram with labels for the body parts. There is a glossary and an activity entitled "Hunt and Find" that can also serve as an indeX. The closing page has a brief description about the author. Another winning entry in the "PullAhead" series. 2001, Lerner, $21.27 and $6.95. Ages 5 to 7. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot <%ISBN%> 0822537648
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-A simple introduction to an engaging, unusual fish. The easy-to-read text includes facts about the creatures' behavior, habitats, and physical characteristics. The male's egg pouch and his production of live young are described, but no mention is made of the female's placing of the eggs in the pouch during mating. Numerous full-color photos capture the eye. A range map for North America and part of Mexico and a diagram of the external parts of a male sea horse complete the package. This book is somewhat simpler than Elaine Landau's Sea Horses (Children's, 1999) and Rebecca Stefoff's Sea Horse (Benchmark, 1996), but is geared to the same audience.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
