More About This Textbook
Overview
John R. Petersen and Amin A. Mohammad, along with a panel of leading basic and clinical investigators, review those CE methods that are now replacing many routine serum and blood tests in clinical and forensic laboratories. Major areas reviewed include the coating of columns; the analysis of serum, urine, and CSF proteins and paraproteins; abnormal hemoglobins and hemoglobin Alc; peptides, amino and organic acids; therapeutic drugs; drugs of abuse; viral load; and short tandem repeats (STR). The methods discussed include capillary zone, micellar, electrokinetic, capillary gel, and non-aqueous electrophoresis. Innovative and highly practical, Clinical and Forensic Applications of Capillary Electrophoresis demonstrates the power and versatility of CE-not only to develop new assays, but also to markedly simplify today's clinical and forensic laboratory methodology.
Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: Valerie L. Ng, PhD MD(Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital)Description: This is a comprehensive review of the principles and current and future clinical applications of capillary electrophoresis.
Purpose: The intent is to give the reader an overview of the many clinical and forensic uses of capillary electrophoresis.
Audience: This book would appeal to a wide range of readers, including those interested in learning more about the basic principles, those interested in detailed discussion about its current use, and those who are interested in the visionary future uses of capillary electrophoresis.
Features: The 20 chapters are divided into six major groups: anintroduction and basic principles, protein electrophoresis, metabolic diseases, immunoassay, molecular diagnostics, and mass spectrometry/therapeutic drug monitoring/toxicology. The introductory section gives an excellent and concise summary of the principles and current clinical uses of capillary electrophoresis. The remaining chapters are progressively less satisfying proportional to the remoteness (i.e., in actual practice versus purely speculative) of the application of capillary electrophoresis to its actual use. For example, the sections on immunoassays and molecular diagnostics simply speculate on potential applications of capillary electrophoresis to these disciplines, solely related to its proven ability of analyte separation. These speculations are followed by a discussion of the problem of serial and single sampling inherent to capillary electrophoresis, thereby negating the previous discussion of its advantages! The chapters are written in very individual styles with little sense of cohesiveness, leaving one with a sense of reading a disparate set of treatises linked only by a common technology. The few illustrations are in black and white and relatively unrefined.
Assessment: This book fills a niche for those curious about this technology. It would be of greatest use to those with an academic interest in capillary electrophoresis. The average user would be hard pressed to justify this purchase given that a significant portion of the book is given to speculation regarding the future application of this technology.
Booknews
Overviews the current use of capillary electrophoresis (CE) in the clinical laboratory as a separation method for proteins, metabolic diseases, and immunoassay. The 20 chapters review the coating of columns, the analysis of serum and urine for proteins, abnormal hemoglobins and hemoglobin Alc, peptides, amino and organic acids, viral load, and short tandem repeats. The methods include capillary zone, micellar, electrokinetic, capillary gel, and non-aqueous electrophoresis. The last section describes how CE can be used in conjunction with mass spectroscopy to detect heavy metal poisoning, screen for drugs of forensic significance, and monitor therapeutic drug levels.
