Editorial Reviews

John A. Robinson
This third edition multiauthored text can be viewed as the mother lode of pathophysiology, clinical diagnosis, and treatment of immunocompromised patients. The relevant infections are discussed in an organ systems approach by experienced clinicians who are also recognized clinical investigators. This book has a unique niche in internal medicine, organ transplantation, and infectious diseases. It would be appropriate for a variety of practitioners, including internists (infectious disease specialists, transplanters, and hematologists/oncologists) and pediatric specialists in critical care, hematology/oncology, and infectious disease. There is not only a wealth of true clinical pearls in each chapter, but also a reasonable and direct approach to diagnosis and treatment balanced with a healthy skepticism of many high-tech and high-cost approaches to the care of these patients. Clinical investigations and pharmaceuticals that have not proved helpful are indeed stated to be such. There are precise therapeutic regimens outlined for each organ system infection. This is a big help to some users who may only occasionally venture into this complex area of critical care. I tried but could not find any major weaknesses within this text. It is highly recommended for all clinicians who take care of these daunting patients.
Booknews
A revised and updated (2nd ed., 1988) practical guide that summarizes the major issues and controversies involving the medical and surgical management of immunocompromised patients. The guiding theme is to identify the epidemiologic, pathophysiologic, and clinical clues that lead to early diagnosis and effective therapy, or even prevention. On the one hand, there are detailed chapters on host defenses, epidemiology, and prevention of infection, as well as particular infections (e.g., herpes viruses, fungi, parasites). On the other hand, since the patients do not present with a label stating the name of the infection, other chapters are devoted to particular organ- system infections (septicemia, skin, lung, and central nervous system) and infections in particular patient groups (e.g., transplant patients, AIDS patients). Review from the Journal of the American Medical Association

'With admirable clarity the authors- all highly regarded in their respective fields- present the clinician with a supremely readable text. The emphasis here is pragmatic, although there is sufficient pathogenesis and physiolgy to provide a fine balance.'- from the Journal of the American Medical Association
