Full use is made of flow charts and other graphics; clinical "boxes;" summary points; case histories; and clinical photographs. The whole orientation of the book is to concentrate on how clinical biochemistry relates to the care of the patient and to ensure that the medical student understands how to interpret laboratory.
  • Covers clinical biochemistry from the point of view of the clinician using the diagnostic service
  • Presents topics in easily accessible two-page spreads
  • Includes mini case histories, key point boxes, flowcharts, and summary points
  • Well illustrated with four-color drawings and clinical photographs
  • New appendix added of annotated web resources for students to take further many of the topics covered in the book.
  • To reflect the difficulties people have sometimes in analyzing hyper- and hypo-kalaemia, the existing spread is split into two - one spread on hyperkalaemia and another on hypokalaemia.
  • The spread on hypertension will be revised and updated to reflect the fact that biochemistry is used as much or more in guiding treatment as it is in screening for secondary hypertension.
  • Spreads on Myocardial Infarction, Cancer and Tumour Markers will all substantially revised and updated.

Editorial Reviews

Stephen E. Kahn
This book is an extensively illustrated softcover book covering fundamental aspects of clinical biochemistry at a medical undergraduate level. The text is uniquely structured into double-page learning units on clinical topics instead of in the traditional chapter format. The purpose of this text is to illustrate and describe significant aspects of clinical biochemistry, in conjunction with problem-solving and case histories, in an abbreviated format (i.e., two pages per learning unit). The audience is the medical undergraduate student who has already gained the basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. The text may also be used to teach advanced medical students and junior residents about key practical aspects of selected clinical areas of biochemistry. The book is intentionally overillustrated and relies minimally on text. It uses case histories and problem-solving methods, but suffers from a complete lack of additional references. The book provides a useful compilation of clinical biochemistry topics in a short, practical, well-illustrated, problem-based fashion. It does require fundamental knowledge of biochemistry, anatomy, and physiology and must be used in conjunction with a practical teaching course or with other materials. As a companion text to highlight various basics of clinical information, it is adequate.

From the Publisher
"The new edition of Clinical Biochemistry covers all aspects of the subject needed by medical students. Great layout with flow charts, clinical 'boxes', summary points, case histories and clinical photographs. This book successfully relates clinical biochemistry to the care of the patient. Covers clinical biochemistry from the point of view of the clinician using the diagnostic service and doesn't overburden with description of laboratory techniques. Useful not only through medical school but also to improve understanding of biochemistry at more advanced levels for clinical practice."
3rd Year Medical Student, Edinburgh University, September 2004.

This book is very good as an overview to the subject of clinical biochemistry, and it is clear, non-waffly and easy to read, with good colourful diagrams.
