Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Susan Tobin, MSN, RN, CPON (University of New Mexico Children's Hospital)
Description: This pediatrics reference offers quick access to important information needed when caring for the children. Over 110 health alterations most common to pediatrics are presented in a consistent format throughout the chapters.
Purpose: The purpose is to offer nursing students and professional nurses a reference book that affords quick access to pertinent information in pediatrics. The common pediatric conditions are reviewed in separate chapters and each one is presented in a consistent format.
Audience: According to the author, the book is intended for nursing students and practicing clinical nurses working with pediatric patients. The book tends to be more suitable for nursing students as there are brief overviews of the pediatric conditions and thorough treatment of the nursing process.
Features: Each chapter delivers a brief overview of the topic and would be useful for both student and novice pediatric nurses. The bold headings in a contrasting color allow for quick access to needed information. The references at the end of each chapter enable nurses to identify resources for additional information. The appendixes are superb. For example, appendix A is on diagnostic tests and explains their definition and use as well as the procedure and nursing care. The information is succinct in each chapter, but is not always the most accurate. For example, the discussion of mitotic inhibitor antineoplastics in the chemotherapy section lists several of the agents with the statement that they cause myelosuppression. Vincristine, one of the agents listed, does not cause myelosuppression.
Assessment: This reference would be ideal for nursing students or nurses new to pediatrics. The use of the nursing process helps both groups focus their care appropriately. The appendixes are extremely helpful and valuable to all nurses.
