Editorial Reviews

Penny Wolfe Moore
This is a clinical companion to a large medical-surgical textbook, but it certainly could be used as a stand-alone reference. It is organized alphabetically by medical diagnosis, but the content is very much nursing. Nursing diagnoses and patient teaching are included for each medical diagnosis. This pocket-sized book provides easy access to concise information needed to provide care to patients with a variety of clinical problems (about 210 medical diagnoses and 21 separate procedures are included). Nursing students and nurses who encounter patients with many different medical diagnoses (i.e., rural practice, home health, general practice) will find this book most helpful. The authors are all associated with a large university. The content of the book reflects current clinical knowledge. This glossy paperback 750-page book is attractive. It contains a few black-and-white illustrations and tables where appropriate. There are no references but its companion text is well referenced. The table of contents and index are complete and easy to use. This is a great reference book. Nursing students, faculty, and any nurse encountering a wide variety of medical diagnoses will find this book very useful. The book is arranged in alphabetical order by medical diagnosis, which is very user-friendly. Each condition includes information about the definition, pathophysiology, diagnosis studies, nursing management, nursing diagnosis, patient teaching, and much more. It is a very comprehensive but succinct reference to nursing care.

This is a companion pocket book to complement Lewis' Medical-Surgical Nursing: Assessment and Management of Clinical Problems, 5th edition (Mosby, 2000). This companion book is a condensed reference for nurses and nursing students with concise information on more than 230 disorders, medical information, and nursing care recommendations. This is a condensed reference of essential information on more than 230 medical-surgical diseases, disorders, and clinically related subjects. The authors are targeting nurses and nursing students. This book is a good complement to Lewis' text, and it is an excellent guide to use in the clinical area. More than 230 disorders are reviewed. Tables and section headings are easy to follow and scan because each heading is in bold blue lettering. There are clear and concise tables in many sections listing common conditions leading to the disorder. A brief description is given of each disease, including clinical manifestations, diagnostic studies, and collaborative care. A section on nursing care, goals, nursing diagnoses, nursing interventions, and patient teaching follows. This book is divided into three sections. In the first the disorders are described (they are listed in alphabetic order). In the second section common medical surgical treatments are reviewed, and are beautifully illustrated with two-color graphics. The third section has useful reference information and tables (for instance, there is a table of temperature conversions and a section in which heart sounds are described). I would recommend this book as a quality concise review of diseases. It will be useful to nursing students to complement the textbook and can be ahandy reference for practicing nurses. This reference book is similar to other handbooks. Text is easy to read with sections clearly marked so it can be reviewed easily.
From The Critics
Reviewer: Josie Martin Bowman, RN, MSN, DSN (East Carolina University )
Description: This clinical companion to Lewis et al.'s medical-surgical nursing textbook provides information on 200 medical-surgical diseases, disorders, and clinically related topics. The last edition was published in 2004.
Purpose: This is intended as a reference to help nurses care for patients and their families during illness and healthy states. This type of book is useful to nursing students and practicing registered nurses due to its condensed size.
Audience: It is written for all levels of nursing, including students who need to quickly look up something about the client's disease and practicing nurses who want a quick reference guide. The authors have years of experience in preparing textbooks and references for student and practicing nurses.
Features: The first of the book's three sections covers the diseases and disorders in alphabetical order, cross-referenced with the main textbook. The second unit discusses common medical-surgical treatments and procedures and the role of the nurse. The final section covers assessment, medication administration, some lab tests, and abbreviations. The authors also include some phrases in Spanish.
Assessment: This would be a good book for a school or college of nursing that desires a reference that students can take into clinical. Recently updated, it is current and correlates with most medical-surgical textbooks.
