Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Raj Tummala, MD (Wyeth Pharmaceuticals)
Description: This is a very useful reference on practical psychopharmacology covering all the major diagnostic categories. Each category is covered in a specific pattern, assisting the clinician to make decisions, from applying the treatment of choice to switching and augmentation.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an easy to use decision-making process on the current psychopharmacology practices. The book allows the clinician to start from psychopharmacology practices that have the most relevant clinical data to the latest solutions without any data. The objectives are worthy and the authors do a good job of meeting them.
Audience: The audience includes students, residents, private practitioners, and anyone involved in the treatment of patients with psychiatric disorders. The authors and contributors are very solid and credible authorities in their respective areas.
Features: The book is divided into eight categories covering all the major disease entities. Each disease process is covered in a clear, defined format starting with the most common practices that have the most amount of supporting clinical data followed by switching and augmentation strategies. Each chapter also covers some of the more novel experimental approaches. Each chapter also has a comprehensive reference section that is fairly updated.
Assessment: This is a very useful and easy to read book for anyone practicing psychiatry. The book provides an alternative to algorithms by various decision-making trees.
