Editorial Reviews

Robert E. Lee
The 19th edition of this book is a pathology and laboratory medicine classic. It consists of seven topical parts, 63 chapters, and 1,556 pages of current laboratory medicine. The author indicates the objective of this edition is to provide a scientific information resource in virtually all aspects of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.... In a time of focused textbooks, monographs, and journal references, a hallmark reference such as the new Henry meets a need. The organization and content meet the author's objectives. The author intends the book for a large and diverse audience from medical technology and medical students to pathologists and primary care physicians. Clearly, the medical technologist, clinical laboratory scientist, and pathologist will routinely consult this source. Dr. Henry has been associated with the text since the 14th edition in 1969. The parts of the book, The Clinical Laboratory, Clinical Chemistry, Urine and other Body Fluids, Hematology, Coagulation and Transfusion Medicine, Immunology and Immunopathology, and Medical Microbiology and Molecular Pathology are presented by 92 contributors. Classic references are retained with more recent references added where indicated. The book includes material useful in the laboratory and clinic from preanalytical testing to molecular pathology in a well-illustrated, well-referenced text that includes ten inserts of color plates. Dr. Henry, working with four associate and three assistant editors and 92 contributors, has produced a valuable updated source of information for clinical pathology and laboratory medicine. It is an important resource for all laboratorians and a useful resource for students, pathologyresidents, and clinicians, particularly internists and other primary care physicians. It is recommended for libraries, laboratories and all whose work is in pathology and the clinical laboratory.
From The Critics
Reviewer: Valerie L. Ng, PhD MD(Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital)
Description: This is the 20th edition of a comprehensive and authoritative book covering the use of clinical laboratory tests in diagnosing, treating, and managing care of patients. The previous edition was published in 1996.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a comprehensive resource for all scientific information regarding laboratory medicine and clinical pathology as they relate to patient care. This edition, in keeping with the excellence of past editions, has achieved its worthy goal.
Audience: This book would appeal to individuals at many different levels of training. It would be appropriate for medical technology students, medical students, pathology and laboratory medicine residents and attendings, practicing pathologists and laboratorians, and anyone else interested in the integral role of the clinical laboratories in patient care. The editors and authors are recogized internationally for their expertise.
Features: The book, in keeping with previous editions, is a truly comprehensive text of laboratory medicine. In 68 chapters and 1512 pages, it covers anything you might ever want to know about clinical laboratory testing and its relationship to patient care. This edition maintains the excellence of previous editions, with extensive and authoritative yet concise information regarding test methodology, pitfalls and interferences, test interpretation, and relevance of test results to patient care. An entirely new feature of this edition (11 chapters, no less) is a section devoted to the newly emerging field of molecular pathology, covering basic principles to methodologies to regulatory issues governing this type of testing. This edition, as with previous editions, contains wonderful color photomicrographs of microscopic findings common in a clinical laboratory, spanning peripheral blood, urine sediment analysis, and microorganisms detected in various body fluids or tissues.
Assessment: As with previous editions, this book will continue to be a mainstay of any laboratory medicine library. It has been, and will continue to be, regarded as the "bible" of laboratory medicine. It's an incredible bargain at $99. Get it!
