This is a second edition of a comprehensive book on conventional and newer electromyography techniques and clinically relevant anatomic, physiologic, and clinical manifestations of peripheral nerve and muscle diseases. The purpose is to discuss electromyography and other electrodiagnostic techniques in their appropriate clinical context so readers can understand how they can be used as an adjunct to the neurologic examination in patient diagnosis and management. The authors' objectives are worthy and were met in their entirety. The intended audience includes clinical electrophysiologists, electromyographers, neurologists, and physiatrists. It is written at a level for all practitioners in the field of electromyography, but it would also be useful for residents and fellows with some basic background in electromyography. Not only are the primary authors notable experts in the field, but the inclusion of chapters by Drs. Aminoff, Wilbourn, Kimura, and Fisher is particularly impressive. The charts and illustrations are of good quality and are judiciously placed within the text. Although there were few photographs, the ones in the pediatric electromyography chapter were helpful. Perhaps some of the line art could have been replaced by photos. The numerous references were appropriate; however, it was surprising to see so few references dated more recently than 1990. The lists of acronyms provided at the beginning of each chapter facilitated reading, and the subsections within each chapter are clearly separated, making it easy to reference. This book stands out among other textbooks in electromyography in that it not only presents electrophysiology but also clinical, anatomic, and pathologicaspects of nerve and muscle diseases. It can be used as a reference book and as a comprehensive text for those practicing and training in the field of electromyography.
