Overview

Nuclear cardiology has demonstrated continuous dramatic growth for over 20 years and has become central to the clinical evaluation of patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). Recently, gated SPECT has emerged as the most common approach to myocardial perfusion imaging, and is performed in the majority of nuclear cardiology studies. The use of gated SPECT has resulted in potentially dramatic improvement in the evaluation of CAD, allowing for the routine assessment of both perfusion and function from a single study. This book comprises 12 chapters by leading physicians and scientists in the field, and will be valuable to all students and physicians involved in cardiac imaging.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.

This is the first monograph to thoroughly inform cardiologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and interested physicians about the performance, interpretation, and clinical applications of gated myocardial perfusion SPECT. This book comprises 12 chapters by leading physicians and scientists in the field. It begins with an overview of the role of nuclear cardiology in clinical practice, followed by a description of the anatomic and physiologic principles germane to the assessment of ventricular function. Issues related to acquisition, processing, and quantitation of gated SPECT are then addressed. Interpretation and reporting of both perfusion and function from gated SPECT follow. The discussion then proceeds to artifacts that may be solved by gated SPECT as well as those that may be associated with its performance. The clinical applications of gated SPECT in chronic and acute CAD, as well as in the assessment of myocardial viability are examined next. Cost effectiveness is addressed in a chapter devoted to this issue. The less common application of blood pool SPECT is described, and finally, gated SPECT is compared with the competing modalities of echocardiography, MRI, and CT.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
This monograph addresses the performance, interpretation, and clinical applications of gated myocardial perfusion SPECT. Germano and Berman (professors at UCLA School of Medicine and directors of nuclear medicine physics and nuclear cardiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) present 12 chapters by leading physicians in the field. Topics include an overview of the role of nuclear cardiology in clinical practice; the anatomic and physiologic principles germane to the assessment of ventricular function; issues related to gated SPECT such as acquisition, processing, and quantitation; the interpretation and reporting of perfusion and function; artifacts that it can solve and those that may be associated with its performance; clinical applications in chronic and acute CAD as well as in the assessment of myocardial viability; cost effectiveness; blood pool SPECT; and comparison with competing modalities. Contains many b&w illustrations. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
