Reviewer: Christine J. Egan, RN, MS, ONC (Vassar Brothers Hospital)
Description: This compact reference book contains an enormous amount of clinically relevant information for its size. It provides easy access to essential information for the clinician caring for these highly specialized and complex patient populations.
Purpose: The purpose of this handbook is to assist clinicians with the day-to-day management of stem cell and bone marrow transplant patients. It is a quick comprehensive reference guide to the clinical issues and problems common to these patients.
Audience: The content and format of this guidebook is well suited to its intended audience of advanced practice nurses, specialty nurses, physician's assistants, fellows, residents and medical students. The authors' combined 30-plus years of stem cell and bone marrow transplant experience and extensive literature review lends credence to this volume.
Features: The overall clear design and practical pocket size of this book make it an excellent resource for the busy bedside practitioner. It contains information for pediatric and adult clients. Its outline format with numerous black-and-white illustrations, tables, and charts enables the user to access pertinent information with speed and ease. Every chapter ends with a current reference list. Of note is the chapter on the management transplant of complications, which contains a total of 94 references. A formulary of drugs common to bone marrow and stem cell transplant and a chapter dedicated to diagnostic test interpretations are also valuable assets to this text. An entire chapter is devoted to psychosocial issues.
Assessment: This clear, well-indexed, compact clinical guide is highly recommended for the practicing clinician. It is convenient to carry in a lab coat pocket, and when used in tandem with institutional protocols and procedures, it is sure to become a valuable resource for caring for the potential, actual, and post-transplant patient.
