Overview

The 2nd Edition continues to provide a practical introduction to clinical immunology, covering essential theoretical principles along with serology techniques most commonly used in the lab. Now with case studies added, each chapter is a concentrated learning exercise, first presenting theory and then detailing procedures for simulated clinical testing. The instructive illustrations and practical laboratory exercises have also been updated and visually enhanced with the addition of color. "Case studies and review questions are excellent." -- Michele G. Harms, MS, MT(ASCP), WCA Hospital, Jamestown, New York "Use of red and black inks helps with emphasis and organization. Addition of chapter on molecular bio is a great improvement! Case studies with most chapters are a nice feature; review questions, chapter objectives and chapter summaries are helpful (and necessary). Updated and revised chapters also a plus. Addition of color plates nice too!" -- Brenda Kile, MA, MT(ASCP), CLS, York Hospital, York, Pennsylvania "This text is an excellent resource for clinical laboratory science students. It is brief and practical, which makes it a helpful supplement to my main text that covers immunology theory." -- Michelle Fahs, MT(ASCP), CLS(NCA), St. John's Mercy School of CLS, St. Louis, Missouri "Logically presented. Nicely organized. The learning objectives are clear. The diagrams, graphs, and tables throughout the text are illuminating and serve as valuable instructional aids. The author has performed an admirable job of presenting the subjective matter in a concise, down-to-earth manner. Primarily intended for medical laboratory students, it will be a precious addition to the reference book collection for clinical laboratories of any discipline or specialty. " -- Canadian Journal of Medical Laboratory Science 66:2004

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Valerie L. Ng, PhD MD(Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital)
Description: This is the second edition of a comprehensive laboratory textbook of clinical immunology and serology.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference for laboratory evaluations of immunological diseases and serological tests. This edition expands on the first one by including new information, additional illustrations, and case studies for each subject matter.
Audience: This book would be very useful for clinical laboratory scientists (CLS) in training or early in their practicing career. This book would also be very helpful as the course textbook for anyone teaching CLS students or for those performing such testing in their everyday practice (e.g., CLSs, pathologists, laboratory medicine residents, internal medicine practitioners).
Features: This one-inch thick paperback book has 23 chapters. The first six cover the theoretical basis of immunology, followed by five chapters discussing basic laboratory test methodologies for immunological disorders or serology, another six chapters on specific immunologic disorders, and finally five chapters on commonly performed serological tests. I spent some time on the chapters on immunological disorders because this field is so rapidly evolving. The descriptions of various diseases are concise yet complete, and nicely complemented with discussions of the corresponding available tests. Of note, the old "LE prep" test, a nonspecific test historically used as an adjunct for diagnosing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is not even mentioned - one of many examples that this book accurately reflects current and best laboratory practice! Many of the chapters are followed by an "Exercise" for the interested reader, followed by review questions that nicely capture the key learning points. This book is an excellent reference for anyone learning or practicing clinical immunology or serology, based on its emphasis on evidence-based good laboratory practice.
Assessment: This is a really nice reference to have handy in a clinical immunology or serology lab, and is a MUST for any CLS training program — students and instructors alike.
Booknews
An introductory text primarily for clinical laboratory science students at the second- and fourth-year levels. Combines theoretical principles with practical information on serological techniques commonly used in the clinical lab. Sections cover the nature of the immune system; basic immunologic procedures; immune disorders; and serological diagnosis of infectious diseases. Annotation c.
