Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sushant B. Sharma, M.D.(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This handbook reviews the epidemiology and scope of cardiovascular disease in diabetics and presents an evidence-based approach to the management of all of the cardiovascular risk factors in this population. This second edition updates the 2001 first edition with recent trials, outcome studies, and guidelines that confirm a multifaceted approach to reduce cardiovascular disease in this high-risk population.
Purpose: The purpose is to address current knowledge and guidelines in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease in patients with coexisting diabetes and hypertension. The main objective is the aggressive control of several major risk factors that adversely affect these patients; and subsequently prolong their lives. This handbook presents data from recent clinical trials and successfully highlights the importance of aggressive risk factor modification.
Audience: The book is written for practicing physicians, and primary care physicians will certainly benefit from the review of this material. The authors are credible authorities.
Features: The handbook initially presents data illustrating the epidemiology and scope of cardiovascular disease in the diabetic population. Next, it reviews the pathophysiology of diabetes and cardiovascular disease before systematically addressing the management of hypertension, dyslipidemia, anti-platelet therapy, and diabetes itself. It concludes with a summary outlining a practical approach to cardiovascular disease reduction in diabetics. The authors importantly use an evidence-based approach to risk factor modification which successfully dispels any myths and misconceptions that may hinder that approach. The only shortcomings are the space limitations inherent to a handbook. However, this not intended to be an exhaustive reference and, overall, it delivers on its stated goals.
Assessment: This is a well referenced review of the current knowledge and guidelines in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease in diabetics that presents a systematic and practical approach to risk factor modification. The second edition reviews recent trials and updated guidelines to offer the most current approach to this patient population.
