Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Christopher J. White, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This seventh edition brings treatment recommendations for hypertension up-to-date. The author reviews the latest evidence and explains the rationale for good blood pressure control using a variety of antihypertensive medications.
Purpose: Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Through the years, the guidelines in managing hypertension and the goals of the ideal blood pressure range have changed. This book provides an update of long-term clinical trials comparing different blood pressure medications and summarizing newer clinical trails on the possible benefit of blood pressure reduction.
Audience: The primary audience for this book are internal medicine residents and cardiology fellows, as well as practicing physicians who take care of patients with hypertension.
Features: The book is divided into three parts. The first section discusses the 7th Joint National Committee guidelines on diagnosis of hypertension and lifestyle modification to control high blood pressure. The second section outlines the different antihypertensive agents that are currently used with a focus on their mechanisms of action, side effects and trials done with these agents. The third part is a practical application of theories on blood pressure control and includes results of therapeutic trials. Added tables and figures are very helpful in summarizing the different trials on blood pressure management.
Assessment: The author succeeds in providing a comprehensive review of different trials for blood pressure control and a summary of the current medications available for hypertension management.
