PsycCRITIQUES

The purpose of Clinical Manual of Eating Disorders is to provide a resource "to help clinicians better understand how to care for patients and families seeking help" (p.xix). This goal is masterfully achieved and exceeded at times. Well-organized and thorough discussions extend past the guidelines for the general management of anorexia nervosa and bulimia. This book is a shining contribution to the professional literature.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Steven T. Herron, MD (Assurance Health and Wellness)
Description: Published in an attempt to provide more detail to the previously released American Psychiatric Association Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders: Compendium 2006, this book addresses the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of various types of eating disorders, including binge-eating disorder.
Purpose: In an effort to elaborate upon the previously published guidelines, the book clarifies and further explains the many nuances associated with the identification and treatment of these challenging disorders.
Audience: Though primarily penned for clinicians (psychiatrists, psychologists, nurse practitioners, therapists, social workers, etc.) who are confronted with patients suffering from these disorders, the book should also be a welcome edition for trainees (residents and medical students), families, patients, and those trying to understand eating disorders and their devastating effects on patients and their families.
Features: While the first few chapters introduce more general concepts regarding these cases, the heart of the book revolves around specific aspects of treatment in various patient populations (athletes, cultural considerations, comorbid medical conditions). There are numerous diagrams, tables, and charts, the references are appropriate and recent, and the chapter explaining various aspects of bariatric surgery is very practical and informative.
Assessment: Given the severity of these conditions, and clinicians' relative discomfort with treating and managing these challenging patients, this book provides valuable knowledge and insight in a well written and readable format. The authors are well versed in their particular topics, and make their information interesting and thought provoking. Of note, the chapters on cultural considerations and comorbid medical conditions are particularly enlightening, as is the chapter on athletes and eating disorders. This is a worthy and useful addition to the field that will benefit its readers tremendously.
