Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This concise book is essentially a boiled down version of The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Geriatric Psychiatry, 4th edition (American Psychiatric Publishing, 2009), for clinicians in the field. Written and edited by recognized clinician-researchers in geriatric psychiatry, this is a useful addition to the field.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the editors, is to "address the needs of busy clinicians from various specialties who are involved in the care of older adults."
Audience: The editors target the book at "busy clinicians, as well as researchers, residents, fellows, clinical psychologists, and social workers," who, they state, "will find this compact volume to be of the utmost value, as will anyone seeking to update their knowledge of geriatric psychiatry."
Features: The book covers the psychiatric interview, psychopharmacology, delirium, dementia and milder cognitive disorders, mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, substance abuse, psychotherapy, and psychiatry in the nursing home. Each chapter ends with pertinent and timely citations of the scientific literature.
Assessment: This is a useful and succinct book on geriatric psychiatry written for those who don't have the time to read the giant textbook.
