Overview

"This single-volume reference covers the full range of psychiatric problems affecting older patients, from depression to dementia. Clinical Manual of Geriatric Psychiatry reviews the effects of aging on cognitive performance, including clinical presentations of memory loss and medication-induced symptoms of mental disorder. This manual offers practical guidance to help the clinician no only diagnose and treat these conditions but also address such issues as evaluating competency for informed consent." The book contains guidelines to differential diagnosis of depression and insights on new directions in psychotherapy, a review of both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and non-SSRIs as first-line agents, and advice on switching or combining antidepressants. Chapters on dementia and Alzheimer's disease offer guidance in cognitive mental status examinations and screening tools and also evaluate psychosocial therapies, such as behavior modification and reminiscence therapy. Coverage of anxiety disorders includes phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder, with a focus on psychosocial-behavior therapy and medications of choice. Throughout the text, the authors explain how working effectively with older adults requires a blending of specialized knowledge with a flexible approach to the patient - and the authors show how to bring that about in daily practice.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Heather Boyle, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book covers not only diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders, but also introduces readers to concepts of normal aging. Forensic issues that are especially pertinent to this population are also analyzed.
Purpose: The apparent purpose is to provide a reference that covers the full range of psychiatric problems affecting the older patient. This is a noble goal that the book reaches.
Audience: This book is intended for medical professionals with interest in geriatric psychiatry. Drs. Spar and La Rue are credible experts in geriatric psychiatry.
Features: The book covers diagnostic criteria and challenges for mood, memory, anxiety, and psychotic processes. Appropriate treatments in this age group are also elucidated for each process. In addition, the authors examine the current state of the literature on normal aging. Unique responsibilities of doctors who care for geriatric populations, such as competency and advocacy against abuse, are also discussed.
Assessment: This is an excellent review of geriatric psychiatry to use as a starting point for those interested in mastering the nuances of caring for patients in the geriatric population. This would be an excellent resource for clinicians. The excellent review of the literature this book provides might also direct new research, and could thus be useful for medical professionals whose focus is on research.
