Editorial Reviews

Bruce E. Johnson
This is the third edition of a textbook of clinical medicine written primarily for medical students. The intent of this relatively new entry as a textbook of medicine is to emphasize basic biophysiologic principles as applied to the treatment of disease. The effort is directed toward medical students with the hope for relevance to the practitioner. This lofty goal falls somewhat short, partly because of the compressed size of the book. The book is written for medical students and practitioners. It is more likely to be useful to the former. All authors were originally chosen from the faculty of the Medical College of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London. Illustrations, figures, and tables are present and help illuminate the text; they sometimes fall short of greater elaboration. Selected readings refer only to other textbooks or review articles and are unlikely to be helpful. The index is comprehensive. The book contains many examples of diseases or disease presentations in tropical/subtropical settings, adding relevance for readers in those areas. Undertaking the writing of a new textbook of medicine must be a daunting task. The editors of this text have chosen to direct their efforts toward a medical student audience with hopes of relevance to practitioners. The entries are brief, sometimes to the point of irrelevance (tuberculosis is captured on less than one page). But there is an admirable effort to include diseases of tropical settings. The integration of geriatric principles is also noted. The preface states the book has been successful in appealing to a world-wide medical student audience.
