Editorial Reviews

Doody Review
Reviewer: Daniel B Hier, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description:The authors have produced the fourth edition of their excellent introduction to clinical neurology.
Purpose:This book provides an introduction to clinical neurology that emphasizes correlating clinical signs and symptoms with disease states and sites of neuroanatomical dysfunction.
Audience:It is aimed primarily at medical students doing a rotation on the neurology service. However, neurology residents and attendings will find it a pleasurable and useful review.
Features:The book is largely organized by symptoms rather than diseases. Major neurological symptoms addressed include decreased consciousness, cognitive disorders, vision deficits, equilibrium deficits, seizures, coma, stroke, sensory deficits, and movement disorders. The book is filled with high quality drawings, tables, and neuroimages.
Assessment:Like the prior edition, this book is a pleasure to read. The writing is clear and terse. The chapter and paragraph headings organize the material clearly. The drawings are superb. The emphasis is on clinical-neuroanatomical correlation that leads the student to understand the underlying organization of the nervous system. This is a highly recommended book for medical students wishing to have a concise and instructive text for their two- or four-week neurology rotation.
From The Critics
Reviewer: Amarish A Dave', D.O. (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a review of clinical neurology with an emphasis on anatomy and physiology.
Purpose: It is intended as a review source for basic neurology and a review of relevant anatomy and clinical correlations.
Audience: The book is targeted to clinicians as a review and to residents as a quick reference. It may also serve as an initial text for medical students who are on a neurology service.
Features: All the major clinical areas of neurology are covered using a systems approach. From cell neurophysiology to the gross anatomy and physiologic correlates, the book covers the relevant clinical neurology. As an introduction, it serves as a good bridge between the basic science and the world of clinical neurology. Particularly helpful are the clinical vignettes in each chapter that reinforce the clinical relevance of the basic science material presented.
Assessment: The book is one of the best in its category. It is very useful and is one of the most comprehensive, yet readable books for residents and students.
