Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer:William Miles, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description:This fifth edition of a well-known book reviews the neurologic illnesses and syndromes that have the potential to present with or cause psychiatric symptoms, and provides an excellent review of clinical neuroanatomy.
Purpose:The purpose is to help readers learn about and better understand neurologic conditions that cause or mimic psychiatric symptoms.
Audience:This book is extremely thorough and detailed, and therefore is written for psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, psychologists, and other clinicians who may encounter and treat patients with psychiatric symptoms. The book is not intended for medical students, and indeed is probably too detailed for that audience.
Features:This book is essentially divided into two sections. The first half reviews clinical neuroanatomy and discusses the neurologic examination as well as various system disorders such as muscle disorders and cranial nerve disorders. The second half is more clinically oriented and reviews the various neurologic syndromes, such as headaches, TIAs and strokes, and sleep disorders. The three appendixes found at the end discuss treatment cost, patient support groups, and chromosomal abnormalities that may lead to psychiatric syndromes. A series of review questions follow each chapter, and a complete set of review questions, covering the entire book, is found at the end.
Assessment:Simply stated, this is an excellent book. The boundary between psychiatry and neurology is narrowing and this book helps to bridge the two disciplines. Since an understanding of basic neurology is essential for the modern practicing psychiatrist, this book would be extremely useful for any clinician who sees a psychiatric patient population. This latest edition provides a review of the newer antiepileptic drugs, and offers references to Web sites for various neurologic illnesses as well as support groups. In summary, this book would be an excellent edition to any clinician's library.
