Editorial Reviews

Michael Sitrin
This multiauthored monograph presents the scientific rationale and clinical techniques of enteral nutrition support. This is the third edition of a book last published in 1990. The purpose is to discuss the scientific background needed for understanding the principles of enteral nutrition support and to provide state-of-the-art information concerning clinical techniques and delivery systems. This is a worthy objective because enteral nutrition and tube feeding are being increasingly emphasized in many areas of medicine. This book is primarily intended for clinical nutrition practitioners, and secondarily for critical care specialists. The multidisciplinary group of contributors are mainly from universities and academic medical centers in the U.S., Canada, and Europe and are highly qualified. Many of the chapters are illustrated with high quality black-and-white figures. The text is well referenced, with many of the citations from the 1990s. The table of contents and index are clear and very useable. Some chapters contain useful tables, e.g., formula composition, resources for teaching materials, etc. The third edition contains much important new material, including chapters on micronutrients, nutrient drugs, nutrition and gene expression, endoscopic and radiologic tube placement, transplantation, and other timely topics. As with many multiauthored texts, the chapters vary considerably in quality. Many chapters admirably achieve the stated purpose of the text, providing a clear and concise scientific rationale and a review of modern clinical techniques. Others, however, present a somewhat weak and occasionally inaccurate scientific discussion and tend to emphasize generalnutrition or parenteral nutrition support rather than maintaining the focus on enteral feeding. Some important topics, such as nutrition support and alcoholic liver diseases, are not discussed in sufficient detail. Overall, this is a worthwhile text for the beginning or mid-level nutrition practitioner, but of lesser value for the advanced professional.
