Editorial Reviews

John W. Chandler
This self-test atlas is designed as a companion to Kanski's excellent textbook, Clinical Ophthalmology: A Systemic Approach. Its 222 pages are filled with photographs and illustrations along with reasonably detailed answers. The primary purpose is to assist individuals to prepare for examinations in ophthalmology. The question-answer format allows the reader to more actively educate herself or himself. The authors have provided enough details in their answers to admirably help any reader learn or recall more clinical ophthalmology. The atlas is primarily intended for residents and those just out of training who are preparing for board-type examinations. It is also highly usable for ophthalmologists who are facing recertification examinations or who simply want to enhance their clinical knowledge base. The authors are eminently qualified for the writing of this atlas. Almost the entire atlas is based on illustrations that are of high quality. There is extensive use of color. In some cases, the small size of the illustrations, for example, x-rays, CT, and MRI, make it difficult to appreciate more subtle findings. The atlas is divided into five sections covering most of the commonly tested aspects of ophthalmology. There are no references, but these are available in Kanski's textbook. The index is complete, but it is more useful to go through entire sections. As an enthusiastic advocate of more active forms of education, this atlas is a prized addition to my library where it resides beside Kanski's textbook. The atlas is fun to use and will assist many ophthalmologists in their preparation for successfully passing examinations. There are some terms that are more familiar to colleagues inthe U.K., but these serve to broaden the knowledge of all ophthalmologists. It is very reasonably priced.
