Overview

Many otological and audiological texts are available, but what the clinician needs is a guide to how the various audiological tests can help in the diagnosis, assessment and management of patients. Clinical Otology and Audiology is such a text. Since the first edition there have been many changes in clinical practice. Cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing aids are now frequently used in the management of the hearing impaired. Magnetic resonance imaging has replaced audiological investigations in sensorineural impairments. Considerable improvements have been made in the audiological provision of hearing aids. Attitudes and practice are changing in neonatal screening, particularly the use of oto-acoustic emissions. Finally, the assessment of outcomes of management, both clinical and audiological, is becoming more sophisticated. The second edition introduces and discusses these changes in practice. In addition, paediatric otology and audiology has also been included as this was felt to be an important omission from the first edition. Clinical Otology and Audiology has been written as a basic guide for otolaryngologists in the management of patients with otological disorders. Audiological scientists and technicians will also find it useful as an accessible source of information about the clinical significance of audiological testing.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Alan G. Micco
This is the second edition of a single authored text about clinical audiology and how it relates to clinical otological disease. It updates the previous volume that was published in 1986. The purpose, according to the author, is to provide a review of audiological problems and correlate them with clinical otologic pathology. This edition represents updated and new material that has developed since the last publication. This book is primarily written for otolaryngology residents and practitioners, but is an excellent reference for audiologists as well. The author has provided a fairly complete review of how clinical otologic problems correlate with audiologic findings; very few textbooks take this approach to otologic disease. He also explains how otologic pathology can affect hearing and balance. The author is a recognized authority in this area. There is a very useful appendix that concisely reviews audiological testing. Most of the information is extracted from the author's clinical experience. References are at a minimum. This is a very good textbook and this edition improves upon the previous one. The novel approach to otologic disease in combination with the appendix makes this a useful textbook. This is a good reference for practitioners and residents in otolaryngology as well as for audiologists.
