Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Roberta B. Carey, PhD (Loyola University Medical Center)
Description: The title accurately describes this paperback book filled with the basic facts, procedures, and comparative drawings of blood, tissue, and intestinal parasites.
Purpose: The goal of this book is to provide information on how to perform traditional methods for processing and examining parasitology specimens. Each chapter begins with learning objectives and concludes with patient case studies, which allow readers to check their knowledge.
Audience: The book is written for those beginning their studies in lab medicine. The names of the organisms are accompanied by their phonetic spellings to aid in their pronunciation.
Features: There are 23 color plates and numerous black-and-white photos to accompany drawings of the parasites, but the photographic details are not clear. The table of contents is given by organism name and by tables of their typical characteristics. It is a user-friendly primer with headings in color, key characteristics in boxes, and procedures grouped in their own section. Key terms appear in boldface type when first used, but the reader must turn to the glossary in the back of the book to find out what the term means. Comparative illustrations of similar organisms are grouped together to better distinguish the differences between them.
Assessment: This book provides a quick reference for organism identification and protocols. Chapters are divided by colorful headings and black-and-white drawings. This layout makes the large quantity of facts less imposing and easier to master. The biggest disappointment is the quality of the photographs, which add little to the text. Updated methods used in diagnostic laboratories are not included. The best feature is the inclusion of case studies to illustrate the clinical presentation and the diagnosis of the parasitic disease. Case-based learning is the latest method of teaching students in the healthcare field.
