Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michael E. Gewerth, RDH (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: The book provides new and updated material related to the profession of dental hygiene, both for students and the instructors. One of the new features of this edition is the theme of ethics in each chapter.
Purpose: The purpose is to continue the high standards of education in the dental hygiene field and to be useful as a reference for students, practicing dental hygienists, and retired RDH's who intend to return to practice. The objectives are met.
Audience: The book is written for dental hygiene professionals, both those currently practicing and those contemplating returning to private practice, and students. Having authored eight previous editions, the editor and contributors certainly are credible.
Features: Step-by-step instructions cover all aspects of dental hygiene from radiologic diagnosis and technique to treating patients with special needs and medical/dental areas of concern such as infectious diseases, allergic reactions, blood disorders, medications, and patients with specific diseases. The graphics and explanations are excellent tools for both learning and teaching. The book may be improved by the addition of a CD-ROM and dental repair techniques.
Assessment: These educators and dental professionals have done an excellent job taking this information to a higher level and simplifying complex instructions. This edition is an enhancement of the earlier versions.
Michael F. Gewerth
This eighth edition book features updated information regarding the management of periodontal/gingival disease, dental implants, and dental radiology theory. The content is designed to assist in teaching students of dental hygiene as well as to serve as a reference guide for practicing dental hygienists. The target audience for this text is students of dental hygiene. The contents include instructions for obtaining a medical history, infection control procedures, periodontal therapy, and patient care recommendations. This is a high quality teaching text and a good source of information for the practicing dental hygienist. The full array of issues as they pertain to patient management for the hygienist are reviewed. In this regard it should prove of value for both hygiene instructors and the students they teach. It will further serve as a useful reference for practicing hygienists.
A comprehensive text with material presented in a concise format. Sections introduce the tasks of the professional dental hygienist, detail preparation for dental hygiene appointments, address details of patient assessment, introduce teaching of the patient's own oral care, discuss professional treatment areas of nonsurgical periodontal therapy, and address concerns surrounding patients with special needs. Pedagogical features include chapter outlines, technical hints, key word boxes, and step-by-step descriptions of procedures and tasks. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
