Overview

Praise for this book:

Readable, relevant, and interesting...this book cuts through jargon, recapitulates key concepts, and clarifies with current examples from the literature...recommend[ed].--Doody's Review

A thoughtful introduction and guide to clinical research for surgeons. The book is especially useful because surgical research differs from drug and device research in matters like control treatments, blinding, regulation, and funding. -- Norman M. Goldfarb, Journal of Clinical Research Best Practices, August, 2012.

Clinical Research for Surgeons is a practical guide for understanding, planning, conducting, and evaluating surgical research. It covers the principles of evidence-based surgery and applies these principles to the design of suitable research studies. The reader will come to fully understand important concepts such as case-control study, prospective cohort study, randomized trial, and reliability study. The book provides valuable discussions of the critical appraisal of published clinical studies, allowing the reader to learn how to evaluate the quality of such studies with respect to measuring outcomes and to make effective use of all types of evidence in patient care.

Highlights:

  • Insights from experienced surgeons and veteran researchers
  • Easy-to-reference text boxes with Key Concepts, Jargon Simplified, and Examples from the Literature
  • Coverage of both open and minimally-invasive surgical procedures
  • 50 illustrations demonstrating key points

This book is a valuable reference for clinicians and residents in a range of disciplines, including general surgery, orthopedic surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, urology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, interventional radiology, cardiac surgery.

Editorial Reviews

[Provides] practical advice...An international cast of authors...make the book readable, relevant, and interesting...this book cuts through jargon, recapitulates key concepts, and clarifies with current examples from the literature...recommend[ed].--Doody's Review
From The Critics
Reviewer: Timothy Daniel Light, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This book provides practical advice for clinical investigators and those interested in contributing to clinical research. An international cast of authors who have spent their careers in applied surgical research make the book readable, relevant, and interesting. If you still shudder from the statistics lectures in medical school, you will appreciate how this book cuts through jargon, recapitulates key concepts, and clarifies with current examples from the literature.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide investigators interested in surgical clinical research a roadmap to understand issues in clinical research and to navigate the challenges in designing trials, interpreting results, and implementing clinical research protocols. In this era of evidence-based medicine, surgeons have an opportunity to focus the research on clinically important problems and integrate the results into improving outcomes for surgical patients. This book will introduce interested surgeons to the requisite skills.
Audience: The book is most appropriate for surgeons who have committed their intellectual efforts to clinical surgical research. Although medical students or surgical residents in training for nonresearch careers might find the book useful and interesting, it is probably too detailed to hold their interest. Many of the authors are orthopedists, and many of the examples from the literature stem from orthopedic trials, but surgeons in all subspecialties will appreciate and benefit from reading this book. The authors hail predominantly from the U.S. and Canada, with a few from Europe. This diversity provides outstanding perspective and balance.
Features: The book is divided into three main sections covering background and history, technical principles of research, and practical conduct of research studies. In each section, the chapters progress logically with minimal repetition. Consistently throughout the book, highlighted paragraphs point out key concepts, jargon simplified, and examples from the literature. Well-placed, concise tables and figures supplement the text. These presentation techniques are valuable to readers. One weakness is in the historical discussion of ethical principles of research, which is explicitly addressed only as a subsection of an introductory chapter. Thankfully, it is well referenced, allowing interested readers to delve more fully into the topic.
Assessment: I would recommend this useful book to any resident, fellow, or junior faculty member interested in conducting clinical research. It is readable, understandable, and applicable.
