Overview

Considered by many to be the most relied-upon, practical text of its kind, Clinical Sonography: A Practical Guide is appreciated for its clear, concise writing, consistent format, and problem-based organization. This text cuts through complicated material to deliver the clearest and most comprehensive guide to sonography, leading students from the basics of imaging and positioning to more advanced clinical tips on instrumentation and report making.

The Fourth Edition includes over 800 new black-and-white images and 48 full-color images. New chapters cover ankle problems, malpractice, laboratory accreditation, and ergonomics. Chapters on artifacts, interventional techniques, and shoulder sonography have been extensively revised.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Adel Ann Dotzler
This is a wonderfully diagrammed book on sonography that is easy to read and understand. It is an effective guide, aiding technologists in the critical thinking needed for day-to-day scanning. It presents technologists with common problems associated with scanning as well as some common sense solutions to them. I believe that this book would be especially helpful for sonography students, beginning scanners, or residents. The diagrams and illustrations provided are clear and easy to decipher. Content is presented in a logical manner, and is always to the point. The ""Pitfalls"" section provides a unique tool. ""Where else to look"" is an excellent reminder to the scanner to be thorough in the investigation. This section also indicates other structures to be investigated. This is a very useful text prompting the reader to think about scanning in a logical manner. It would be a welcome addition for a sonography school or hospital library. The information provided on intracranial sonography, joints, and transplants is some of the most understandable text that I have read. The only improvements I could see would be the addition of normal obstetrical scanning and a more in-depth section on vascular studies.

I got this book on one of my trips in the USA couple of years ago, while searching for know-it-all book. With this book you can make the most of the real-time examination, evaluating the patient dynamically. As an european resident doctor in a junior year now, who does roughly 40 U/S examinations a day, there are times I still go back to the book and flip it though. It is great in several aspects -the book gives you all you might need -from relevant laboratory values through alternative positions to visualize what you need to see even in cases you are unable to get the needed picture due to whatever reasons. It is nicely organized, with plenty of pictures and schemes, easy to read and look up the info you need at the spot, although not much detailed on diseases themselves it is, however, rich in describing the sonografic appearance of a disease -and that's what is important for a radiologist... In other words, this book gives you the tool to examine a patient and uncover the reason of patients's complaints. Great foundations to build on and a necessary reference you might want to keep at hand !
