Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Ryan B Feeney, PharmD (Community Pharmacy)
Description: This pocket guide is an annually updated reference of commonly used drugs and the need-to-know facts for each agent. It also classifies medications and contains multiple charts categorizing them within each class.
Purpose: The purpose is to identify the most commonly prescribed and clinically relevant medications. This handbook includes an extensive numbers of drugs commonly used in medical practice.
Audience: Although the book may be used by various members of the healthcare team, students and residents will find this guide to be most helpful in their day-to-day work.
Features: Containing information on over 1,400 medications, this guide is broken down into three distinct areas: classification, drug data, and tables. The majority of the information is in the drug data section. For each medication, it includes name (brand and generic), black box warning (if applicable), uses (both labeled and unlabeled), mechanism of action, dosing, warnings/precautions, contraindications, dosage forms, and other key information. In this section, readers will find a more concise and approachable version of the medication package insert. In addition, helpful medication tables and charts help organize and clarify various differences within each drug class.
Assessment: This pocket-sized reference contains an extensive amount of information for each drug as well as unique characteristics. It is on a par with other similar references, and it would honorably serve as an additional tool in the pockets of up-and-coming healthcare professionals.
