Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Hahn creates a wonderful, fast-paced tale for adventure and mystery fans, in which Logan Forbes finds himself moving into a run down house in Bealesville, a new town outside of Richmond, Virginia. Before he even enters his new home, he learns from the boy next door that it is known as the "murder house." The previous owner was Mrs. Donaldson, who three years prior was found dead at her cellar steps and her house ransacked. Despite the weird factor of Logan's new neighbor, Arthur Jenkins, they become fast friends with similar hobbies like reading, exploring, and staying away from sports. They begin to discover clues as to what happened to the missing money from the local "closed for the season" and recently sold amusement park, the Magic Forest, where the late Mrs. Donaldson worked. Logan and Arthur must overcome local bullies, strains of new friendship, being social misfits, dangers of exploring a condemned amusement park, and gathering enough evidence to prove Mrs. Donaldson's innocence and catch the killer embezzler before starting a new school year without being labeled losers. This story has a great combination of plot, setting, and characters. Readers will enjoy trying to solve the murder mystery while identifying with the social misfortunes of being unpopular, entering middle school, and moving into a new town. It is a worthy addition to any popular fiction collection. This novel is a page turner with an engaging main character in Logan Forbes and his crazy sidekick Arthur. Reviewer: Karen Sykeny
From The Critics
Long-time readers of Hahn's work will be pleased to find that she retains her magic for writing mysteries for young readers. Logan is not happy about his family's move from Richmond to the small town where his father will teach. He is even less happy when Arthur, the kid next door, decides to become Logan's new best friend! Arthur, who lives with his grandmother, quickly makes himself at home at Logan's. He walks in without knocking, arriving most days in time for breakfast, and he quickly learns where cookies and other snacks are stashed in the cupboards. Shortly after they meet, Arthur informs Logan that the home's last owner, Mrs. Donaldson, was murdered in the basement. She had been employed by a now-closed amusement park that accused her of embezzling thousands of dollars. Arthur decides that he and Logan should solve the mystery. Logan soon realizes that Arthur is not highly regarded by his peers, but he slowly comes to regard the initially-unwanted companion as a friend. Their investigation takes them all around town. They find a clue hand-written by Mrs. Donaldson in Logan's musty attic, search local history files at the local library, and even trespass at the overgrown Magic Forest amusement park. The scenes in the park are downright creepy. There is high drama as the boys try to stay one step ahead of those involved in both crimes. Astute readers may solve the mystery for themselves as they read. Hahn has woven family abuse, social class and ethical issues into this engaging and quick read. Reviewer: Peg Glisson

A great mystery that will keep you on your toes!

Closed of The Season is a page-turning mystery full of suspense written by Mary Downing Hahn. Logan is the new kid in the neighborhood, and he needs friends. The first friend he meets is a wacko named Arthur. Arthur takes Logan to a scary, horrific, kudzu infested nightmare land called 'the magic forest'. Arthur then drags Logan into a mystery that was left unsolved: who killed Myrtle Donaldson.

The reason that I loved this book is because it is a great mystery that keeps you on your toes 'in your mind'. Be sure to watch out for keywords so you can solve the mystery along with the dynamic duo. When you solve it, you can thank me.

Te reasons you should read this book is because it will put some action in your life, no offense. Also it will make you think of the possible murder suspects and the reasons that they would commit the crime. Closed for the Season teaches you that all mysteries should be solved. I highly recommend Closed for the Season.

New to the neighborhood, Logan isn't exactly thrilled when Arthur, the weird kid next door, bustles over to welcome him. Right away, Logan can tell that Arthur is going to be a challenge.

The other less than thrilling thing that Logan learns about his new home is that its previous owner, Myrtle Donaldson, was murdered. How come his parents didn't check out something like that before they agreed to buy the rundown place?

At least it's summer vacation, so Logan has time to get to know the place before he's thrust into making friends at school. He's not much of an athlete, and if his past school experiences are any indication, making friends with the cool kids will probably be a disaster.

When Arthur shows up on Logan's doorstep and offers to show him around, he guesses his friendship is better than nothing. The two end up having a lot in common and finding Myrtle Donaldson's killer turns them into a sort of crime-fighting team.

The murder, the possibility of the killer's involvement in embezzlement, and the bulldozing of a local, historic amusement park all combine for some great adventure. Normally law-abiding Logan find himself following the lead of reckless Arthur as they investigate Logan's musty attic, the local library, and the overgrown grounds of Magic Forest. They are clever and creative enough to discover some clues that lead them into some dangerous territory.

Mary Downing Hahn is a master of mystery. As the author of novels for young people, she captures the spooky atmosphere of the old amusement park and the excitement of the chase as she reveals the clues to the years old murder mystery.

CLOSED FOR THE SEASON is an excellent addition to any middle grade mystery collection.

    It Was OK

Although I respect Ms. Mary Downing Hahn and love her books and the way they capture you and pull you in, I was dissapointed in this book. In her other books she adds suspense like I know of almost no other authors to do, but in this book, it was almost..well..BORING! Im sorry, but I didnt care for it.

    Cover Better Than Content

I bought this book because it looked and sounded every bit as interesting as The Old Willis Place and The Doll in in the Garden. Instead I found it disappointing and very frustrating. The story was predictable, the adults were either complete air heads (Logan's mother) or extremely rude and completely out of line in dealing with children which were not their own (Nina / Mr. DiSilvio). Nina's personality was not consistent. First she is friendly with the boys, the next she seems to be trying to seduce "Mr. DiSilvio" at a party, then she is lying to Logan's mother and purposely hurting two innocent children and in the end she is unsympathetic and rude to the innocent victim's daughter. I thought the reactions and conversations were unrealistic and the people, with the exception of perhaps Logan and his father, were ugly and annoying. In the end it is "Nina, Mr. DiSilvio and Logan's mother" who I found myself wishing had been murdered. That would have been justifiable homicide.
