All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Better Than Ezra was always a staunchly classicist band, raised on the college rock of the '80s and turning out a series of earnest records that paid homage to that sound but were released in the post-grunge era. They had more success than most post-grungers since they were classicists dressed up in heavy sincerity, but they had hooks, best illustrated on the breakthrough "Good" and the yearning "Desperately Wanting." Better Than Ezra was always a staunchly classicist band, raised on the college rock of the '80s and turning out a series of earnest records that paid homage to that sound but were released in the post-grunge era. They had more success than most post-grungers since they were classicists dressed up in heavy sincerity, but they had hooks, best illustrated on the breakthrough "Good" and the yearning "Desperately Wanting." But as the '90s drew to a close, most guitar bands of the mid-'90s were hit hard by shifting tastes and changing fashions, leaving the group out in the cold along with many of their peers. BTE regrouped on a new label, Beyond, turning out Closer in 2001. In one sense, time treated the group well, since they simply became better at their craft. Kevin Griffin's songwriting is easier, rarely suffering from the strained sincerity that dragged down many of their albums. This time around, his melodic sense is sharper -- not just on rockers, but on ballads -- and his songs are given excellent treatment by a muscular band, presented in a supple production by Brad Wood. If there is a problem with the record, it's because Closer is occasionally constrained by its time, particularly on the neo-hip-hop of two tracks featuring DJ Swamp (though "Rolling," featuring Toddy, is a highlight). These aren't necessarily bad -- and the single "Extra Ordinary" is catchy, despite Griffin's rap -- but they do give the album an appearance of trying too hard, when this really is the most natural and best record they've ever made.

    Simply Amazing

I absolutely loved this album. After listening to it once I just couldn't stop playing it. Fans of Better Than Ezra's older albums won't be disapointed by this album either, with great, heartfelt songs like ''Sincerly, Me'' and ''Misunderstood.'' And for any fans that haven't seen the band live, I seriously suggest it. They are simply amazing.

    What a Fun Mix

''Closer'' surprised me with its new sounds while continuing to delight me with familiar themes. The single track ''Closer'' is especially endearing while ''Regonize'' brings out the wilder side. I believe this disc is BTE's finest.

    Great new stuff

I've been a fan of BTE for over 5 years and have enjoyed seeing them grow as a band. Each CD has something new to offer, and they always seem to find catchy hooks that sound fresh. This new CD is excellent, a welcome surprise from everything else on the radio. It's mostly a lot of fun pop-rock, and the songs tend to stick in your head for the next couple days. Great stuff, and definitely worth buying.

    Another hot CD by BTE

Great album, that lets us hear a different side of the band, but not too different.

    Their best album yet!

This album is great! They are headed in a new direction without forgetting their roots - this one has some ''funk'' to it. BUY IT - you won't be disappointed!!!

    Lamest Song Ever

I'm sorry to offend any BTE fans out there but I was seriously offended when I heard ''Extra Ordinary'' on the radio. Come on! These guys could do so much better than lame acoustic rap junk....and not even good rap. I mean, they use ''soap on a rope'' in a song, not to mention blatantly quoting other artists. This should be a songwriting felony! I did enjoy early Better Than Ezra and my only hope is that either the rest of the CD is good and they were cursed by a lame single or that they will break out of this rut and make another good CD again. But, my 16 bucks will not be going towards acoustic rappers.

    Better than BTE!!

A must have. As always, BTE has put together a list of songs that don't sound just like their last CD, and don't sound like every other song on the radio these days. There's a lot to like about this. And, the songs that won't get air time, are probably better than the one's that will.

    Another great album!

Once again, the most under-rated band puts out another great disc. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. Check out thier live vibe by checking out their web site for tour dates at: betterthanezra.com
