Josh Groban, the 22-year-old heartthrob singer whose self-titled debut lit up the classical crossover charts for months on end, invites listeners to get Closer on his sophomore studio release (he has also issued a live album tied to a PBS special). Joining again with producer David Foster, Groban delivers another set of heartwarming Europop songs -- including some co-written by the young crooner himself -- that holds true to the endearing formula that drew in his large cadre of fans. Lush, atmospheric production underscores Groban's soulful singing -- and no doubt about it: this boy can sing -- and fans with a hunger for his rich, expressive baritone putting over touching ballads will not be disappointed. Yet the album mixes in other elements, too. World-music touches (such as a Spanish guitar on "My Confession") lace several of the numbers with exotic colors, while Joshua Bell's sweet-toned violin adds lovely spins and swirls to the sentimental "Mi Mancherai (Il Postino)," and the innovative duo Deep Forest help Groban break away from romantic ballads on the rhythm-driven "Never Let Go." Groban's voice has also developed new power and range, as shown by his solid vocal prowess on such numbers as "Per Te" and the gospel choir–backed "You Raise Me Up" (though labeling his singing "operatic" remains wishful thinking). And while the album is less a valiant departure than a satisfying follow-up to the promise of his debut, to Groban's many fans, that's no concession at all.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Aaron Latham
In a short period of time, Josh Groban went from being a talented vocalist ready to enter college to the new prince of romantic music with a best-selling debut album and highly rated PBS special. The successful combination of his classical crossover croon, boyish good looks, and association with berproducer David Foster helped Groban become a sensation. His sophomore studio disc, Closer, stays comfortably within the boundaries built by his debut collection as Foster once again helms a modest set of pseudo-classical pop songs dreamily sung in various languages. Listening to Groban, it is easy to understand why this MOR style suits him so well as his maturing voice is not grand enough to fully embrace operatic material yet remains too rich and technical for typical mainstream pop music. On Closer he works within his limitations and the result is a more consistent listen than the scattershot debut with his voice sounding comfortable performing these emotional European-inspired pop songs. The best tunes bookend the disc as the atmospheric opener, "Oceano," sets an ominous tone while the mysterious "Never Let Go" is a welcome collaboration with Deep Forest that allows Groban to successfully move away from the saccharine ballads and grow as a vocalist. However, there is still plenty of romance included for the PBS crowd as "When You Say You Love Me" painfully cries out like a rejected Celine Dion cut and the Celtic-infused bombast of "You Raise Me Up" plays like the sequel to his debut's most famous song, "To Where You Are." In addition to his improved vocals, Groban contributes three co-writing efforts that include "Never Let Go," and shows that there is a future for him to evenly match his skills as a vocalist and a songwriter. Although the disc still focuses on bland rose petal confessions, its highlights point in the right direction and bring Groban Closer to creating an album that eliminates the sick sweetness while remaining a tasty, satisfying treat.

Although we haven't heard the whole CD, the cuts we have heard indicate that the whole thing will be extraordinary. Two have been posted on the fan website, and one was included on the CD enclosed with the DVD of the PBS concert.

I don't care what ANYONE says--Josh Groban has a gorgeous voice!!! A good friend lent this CD to me this past week, and it was the best borrowed CD I have ever had the good fortune to come upon. What a serendipitous find! Happily, I finally bought the album yesterday. His voice is piercing, full of a clarity and sincerity rarely found in today's pop music. Not only that, his songs themselves are lovely and meaningful. I find myself wanting to cry at certain times when listening to this album. Josh Groban has certainly been blessed in his talent. Don't ignore "Mi Mancherai (Il Postino)": it is an absolute jewel. Joshua Bell's violin performance only adds to the beauty of Josh's vocals. "When You Say You Love Me" is 100x better than anything an American Idol could ever produce, and "You Raise Me Up" is a song in the tradition of a great classic, "Danny Boy." Enjoy the magnificent music of Josh Groban!

"Closer" illustrates some serious growth for Josh Groban. He cowrote and plays piano on "Remember When It Rained" which is a risky endeavor but it's great to see. Some of the tracks sound kinda like a romance novel seduction ("Broken Vow" and "She's Out of My Life"). However, some are straight up amazing like "Oceano" which completely capitalizes on what it is that Josh Groban does best: sing - dead on the pitch and with warmth and lots of delicious orchestrations, harmony and volume. He can interpret a ballad in an unassuming and understated way depsite a deep resonance that can be heard in the next county. That juxtaposition of extreme vocal talent and supressed emotional lingering is what creates his mystique. It's always hard to tell what Josh Groban is thinking or feeling when he sings but the illusion of detachment doesn't interfere with the extraordinary delivery on each track it makes it more interesting. Even if a couple tracks are skippable - the cd overall is a demonstrative big bang.

Josh Groban's CD "Closer" is definitely everything I've been waiting for in his new release. This CD has a different sound then his first release, but the sound compliments his voice just as well. I recommend "Closer" to anyone who loves Josh Groban or Classical music.

I first discovered him when I bought the dvd for the movie Troy. In it he sings the ending song for the movie. Since the first moment I heard it I fell in love with it. Couple of days after I run to the store and bought the Closer cd. The rest is history.

OMG! I love Josh Groban! He is so gifted with his voice and I love this album! My favorite track is "You Raise Me Up." I first fell in love with his voice when I heard "To Where You Are" on the radio. I cried as I was listening to it and couldn't wait to find out who the singer was. He is a true rising star!

This cd is awesome. When I saw him perform in the oscars he took my breath away, and I just couldn't wait to buy the cd. And now that I have it, it's on everyday. And the best thing about the cd is the musical, the intruments, and how they are used to make the most wonderful songs I have ever heard. You have GOT to get this CD. You won't regret it.

This album is great. It showcases Gorban's extraordinary musical talent. Josh exlores other horizons from a combination of his typical euro classic to pop and then gospel. His gospel themed You raise me up is my favorite. I am really glad I bought this CD!

Look, I'm a big fan of Josh Groban. I absolutely love his voice, and I personally like the fact that there is at least one twenty-something artist out there who can actually sing (Unlike a certain Britney Spears) The problem is, the boy needs better material. What is with all the cheese whiz on this album? I find myself only being able to listen to the songs in different languages; the ones in English drive me up the wall with their awful lyrics. Ugh. Only "Per Te", "Mi Manchari", and "Oceano" made it on to my iPod, out of thirteen songs or so. Groban's got more than enough talent; he just needs to take it to another level than this psuedo pop-opera stuff. Get himself in a Broadway musical or maybe even a real opera. See if they're remaking Moulin Rogue any time soon (though I rather doubt they are). Anything that keeps him from singing "You Raise Me Up" ever again.

I first heard of josh when i was at work... when i first heard it, i was in awe.... just to hear music in such a way that made me want to sing as well! Very romantic sounding songs which are just the best!!

First of all-whoever 'music-master' is they don't have a clue about music. He sings in Italian-any music fan would know that. If you listen to the likes of contestants on 'American Idol'-they can't sing-they all suck they don't know what music is. This is one of the best albums I have ever heard. he does a great job on Per Te!

What a voice! He could make reading your grocery list sound romantic! I love "Si Volvieras a Mi", "Remember When it Rained", and "You Raise Me Up", but the whole cd is wonderful! I hope that he has a new album out soon.

I bought this album the first day it was available, but made the mistake of only buying one. I had to go back to Barnes and Noble to get three more (two sisters, one daughter). Of course it's for their Christmas presents. This CD is terrific with strong vocals from our favorite male artist of all time. The background music is lovely. Every selection is wonderful
