Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Denise Daley
Fourteen year old Cassie Donovan is grossed out when she finds a large clump of her hair has fallen out. The next morning she is really frightened when she discovers a huge wad of her hair lying on her pillow. Cassie is in disbelief when her parents tell her that all of her hair fell out when she was three years old. She has a condition called alopecia that her parents never told her about because they were hoping it would never come back. There is no cure for alopecia and the treatments that the dermatologist recommends are unsuccessful. Cassie tries to hide her condition and live a normal life; she is on the school track team and she has recently begun dating a really cute boy named Tommy. Unfortunately, her hair continues to fall out and the bald spots are becoming more difficult to conceal. Will all of her hair fall out again, like it did when she was three years old? Will Tommy dump her when he finds out? Will her hair grow back? And most importantly, why is all of this happening to her? This engrossing and well-written story will have readers empathizing with Cassie as she struggles to deal with this life changing condition. Reviewer: Denise Daley

In A Closer Look, author Karen DelleCava gives readers a feisty character who deals with family secrets, boyfriend complications, a cruel teammate--and her own body turning against her. Readers will be rooting for Cassie all along, and will want to cheer for the way she proves that losing your hair doesn’t have to mean losing your spirit.
Young Adult Book Central - Rita Hubbard
There are a lot of great YA's out there, but it has been a long time since I read one as hard-hitting and in-your-face as A Closer Look.
Long and Short Reviews - Peppermint .
One of the most amazing things about A Closer Look is that I highly recommended it to people around me even before I finished the last page. This will be a great story for mothers to read with their daughters, or for anyone to enjoy on their own. Ms. DelleCava's book should make it to Oprah’s reading list because after I was done reading it, I was convinced that it has the ability to change lives

A Closer Look wonderfully captures the plight of Cassie, a teena

A Closer Look wonderfully captures the plight of Cassie, a teenage girl who is losing her hair. She's just begun a relationship with a charismatic boy and fears that her secret will scare him away. Her mother, a former model who wishes Cassie would become a cheerleader or play tennis instead of run track, makes matters worse with her obsession over Cassie's looks.

Karen DelleCava has created memorable characters here both in the lead and supporting roles. We believe in them all. We root for Cassie, feel for her anguish, and rejoice in her victories. I loved this book and would recommend it to all readers who enjoy vividly depicted characters.

As a mother of a teenage girl, I could certainly relate to Cassie and her struggle. The story line and characters intrigued me instantly. Honestly, I could not put the book down. This YA novel will certainly move your heart as you feel Cassie’s pain in attempting to accept the devastation she feels as her beautiful hair falls out in clumps, and then how she attempts to hide it from her peers and new boyfriend. Cassie’s mom as well as Tommy, her boyfriend, carried their own burdens which made for interesting twists in the storyline. I highly recommend this book for all teenagers and parents as well, as they attempt to understand the internal turmoil felt by any young adult.

    Best Book Ever

I love this book! Even though I'm only ten years old, this is definitely one of the best books I've ever read. It teaches kids how to be compassionate and to not judge other people by how they look; to not judge a book by its cover. Cassie is a track star with friends, a boyfriend, and a family, but having alopecia doesn't ruin any of that for her. I would highly recommend to all parents and kids.

Loved this book - recommended for all teen readers.

A Closer Look by Karen DelleCava is just astounding! The first couple pages of the book grabbed me into its clutches and I couldn't stop reading. I was at the edge of my seat throughout the entire book. I could totally relate to the character and after I really got to know Cassie, my mood changed depending on her mood. If she was in a good mood, i was in a good mood. If she was in a bad mood so was I. I could relate to her drive for running, being a runner myself. She was determined despite the stress and trauma of her situation, so I was jumping for joy when she had a huge achievement in her running career! =) Overall, I thought A Closer Look was great book, and I would definitely recommend it to all YA readers (And adults, too!). I would love to see more coming from this amazing author!

    A Closer Look

I really enjoyed reading "A Closer Look". Once I started the book I could not put it down. Cassie is a spirited and strong young girl that reminds you of what it was like to be back in high school when life starts to really change with all of good and bad things. A good read for any age. I can't wait to read Karen's next book.

    My rating *****

When I first heard about this book, my library had to order it for me. When I brought it home, I read half of it in 2 days. By the third day, I finished it at 2am because I couldn't wait until morning! The pain that this young girl, Cassie, was feeling brought tears to my eyes. But her spirit and strong will made me smile. This is a must read and highly recommended for teens or person of any age. Can't wait for the next one-go Karen!!!!!

    A Closer Look

I bought this book for my 15 year old daughter, and wound up reading it before I gave it to her. We agreed about some parts, disagreed about others, but we both enjoyed talking about it with eacg other (and then with 2 of her friends that we passed it on to). Karen DelleCava did not sugar coat a scary, hard hitting topic, but wrote it in a way that 45 year olds and 15 year olds wanted to keep reading (and then talking). Thank you, Ms. DelleCava.
    p.s. What is coming next?

I really enjoyed this book. It was a story of teen courage in the face of alopecia, the ups and downs of treatment, handling the bullies along the way, and the relationship with a mother who has a vanity issue. A very good read!
