VOYA - Bonnie Kunzel
The end is getting closer, but has not yet arrived, in this fourth entry in the Tunnels series. It all started with Will and Chester digging tunnels, trying to find Will's missing archaeologist father. After digging Deeper and experiencing Freefall into the subterranean depths of the Earth in books two and three, the two boys continue to battle the malevolent Styx, and to survive in book four—but in different arenas. Chester joins Drake and a possible Styx ally on the surface, while Will, his father, and Elliott (the girl Drake trained to fight) encounter pyramids and a World War II German Army deep in the bowels of the Earth. The Styx are hot on their trail because the teens stole the virus created to destroy all humans. There are tragedy and triumph as the action switches back and forth, following the adventures of both sets of characters. This novel begins with a bang, and the pace never falters. There is very little background information, so newcomers should start with Tunnels. But fans of the series are going to have a hard time putting it down. There is a lot of action; lively dialogue; diabolical villains and feisty teens; clever cat-like companion hunters; things that blow up; torture and mind manipulation; family and friends in danger; and trust and betrayal. Tune in for more fast-paced action and edge-of-your-seat suspense in the next installment (Spiral). This is a great science fiction adventure series for boys, and of course, girls will enjoy it as well. (Tunnels Book 4) Reviewer: Bonnie Kunzel
Children's Literature - Paula McMillen
Set in multiple layers and locations under present day London, this fourth installment in the "Tunnels" adventure series is also told from multiple perspectives. Start with the first book of the series if you hope to have any understanding of the complex plots and relationships between characters that drive this book. Teens Will and Elliott, and Will's father, Dr. Burrows, are busy excavating pyramids in a subterranean world where the sun always shines. Friend Chester and a crazy misfit hermit are making their way back to the surface world most of us recognize, called Topsoil, in Chester's bid to return home and reassure his parents that he's alive. Temporarily allied with one of the enemy Styx—named Eddie—Drake pursues his ongoing battle to stop the worldwide release of a deadly virus called Dominion. Will's mother, Mrs. Barrows has apparently not died from torture at the hands of the Styx but is now another creature altogether. Unfortunately, the Rebecca twins, who were supposed to have been destroyed at the end of the previous book, Freefall, have survived and are continuing in their efforts to recover and release the Dominion virus. There is one small speech in the book about the Styx's justification for their drastic plans, having to do with saving the earth from the irresponsible consumption and pollution of its surface inhabitants. Various inhabitants of the underground worlds, the Prime Minister of England, Chester's parents, Drake's father, and two great dane-sized hairless cats also play roles—although the story is never told from their perspective. This is an adventure story likely to appeal to boys or girls since there are teen protagonists of both genders; although, the daunting length will deter some. The ending leaves most important issues unresolved, so the reader must be prepared to dive back into the planned sequel, The Spiral. Reviewer: Paula McMillen, Ph.D.
